박관변 ( Kwan Sup Park ) 건국대학교 기초과학연구소 1977 理學論集 Vol.3 No.-
The Korean map Taedong-yaw-chido (大東輿地圖) was, it may be asserted, made based on the latitude and longitude observed several times during the Chosun dynasty together with actual surveys. It may be said as the greatest and most scientific map which marked a new epoch in the map-making history of Korea. It is, therefore, regrettable that no monograph has so far been published pertaining to the precious map, our national treasure. In this paper the history of map-making based on the latitude and longitude in the East and West has been examined with some comparison of their methods of map-making and their genealogy with those of Taedong-yaw-chido. With the purpose of discovering the methods and genealogy of the map, the following points have been studied: 1. Historical survey of map-makings based on actual measurements in Korea, 2. Introduction of surveying technique, and actual measurements, 3. Introducation of surveying and uses of surveying appliances. It has been confirmed in many ways that the map was made by using the European method based on the latitude and longitude, supplemented by the Oriental method of using the sectioned scales of 1:160,000. Accuracy in terms of direction and distances, and the conception of altitude have been closely examined compared with those of modern maps, and the results show that this map has a comparative accuracy.
