본 논문은 중국에서 전래된 불교가 우리나라에 정착되면서 이루어진 승가 교육 가운데 강원교육의 전개과정과 변천을 중심으로 작성된 것이다. 삼국시대 중 불교 교학이 찬란했던 신라시대는 각 사원에서 역량 있는 스님들에 의해 교학을 위주로 개인적인 교육이 이루어졌음을 알 수있다. 라말을 거쳐 고려시대에 접어들기까지의 교와 선은 병립시대, 그리고 융섭의 시대를 맞는다. 고려시대에 교를 중심으로 선을 융섭 하려는 입장에서 교육을 펼쳤던 의천 이후, 근대의 강원 교육에까지 큰 영향을 미친 지눌은 선과 교를 선의 입장에서 융섭하였다. 특히 지눌은 교과목 가운데 사집과목을 선을 바탕으로 하여 저술하는 등, 교육 과목도 선이 중심이 되도록 힘썼다. 이와 같은 선.교 겸수의 강원교육은 지눌에 이어 조선 시대에 들어 벽계정심 이후 벽송지엄에 의해 사집과 사교과 정립 등 체계적인 교육이 이루어진다. 물론 사교과에서 주로 학습되었던 경전도 대부분은 선과 관련 있는 내용을 위주로 선택되었다. 그러나 선사와 교학자 간의 갈등이 완전히 없어진 것은 아니었다. 선과 교의 대립과 갈등은 조선말에 이르기까지 많은 논쟁으로 이어졌다. 지눌의 사상을 철저하게 이은 지엄의 법손 휴정은 그러한 갈등을 해소하기 위해 ‘사교입선(捨敎入禪)’을 제시하였다. 그는 이 방법으로 선교겸수의 대의를 내세워 교학을 선 수행의 앞 단계에 배정하여 간화선의 수승함을 강조하였다. 이후 강원교육은 선원에 가기 전의 학습단계라는 의미가 부여되기도 하였다. 17세기 이후 근대에 이르러 강원교육에서 획기적인 점은 강원교육의 이력과정이 확립되었고, 그 제도의 정비가 체계적으로 갖추어진 것이다. 이력과정은 사미ㆍ사집ㆍ사교ㆍ대교ㆍ수의과로 점차 정리 되었으며, 이력 기간도 10년ㆍ11년 그리고 4년제로 차차 정리가 되었다. 비구니 교육은 비구에 비해 훨씬 뒤에, 그리고 아주 소규모로 이루진다. 최초의 비구니 강원은 근대 이후 비구들의 도움으로 이루어졌으며, 강의도 비구스님들이 주가 되었다. 최초로 비구니 강사가 탄생되면서 비구니 강원으로서 면모를 갖추고 교육되었다. This paper is written focussing on the process of the development and the transition of the Sutra school of monastic education, which was established in our country in the process of the settlement of Buddhism from China. In Silla period of the Three Kingdom era when the doctrinal learning flourished it is realized that mainly personal teaching was made by the prominent monks. From late Silla to early Goryeo, Kyo and Seon entered the age of co-existing and being integrated. After Uichon who executed education with a perspective of integrating Seon centered on Kyo, Jinul, who exercised great influence on the modern Sutra school education, integrated Seon and Kyo centered on Seon. Jinul especially made an effort that the texts of the Sutra school would be Seon-centered, writing the four collections of texts based on Seon. The education of the Sutra school like this with the simultaneous cultivation of Seon and Kyo was carried out systematically with Basic Course and Intermediate Course etc. established by Byeksongjioem after Byekgyejeongsim in Joseon Dynasty. To be sure the great part of the texts taught in Intermediate Course were chosen which had relation with Seon. However the conflict between Seon masters and Kyo scholars didn’t completely disappeared. The confrontation and trouble between Seon and Kyo had many controversies go on to late Joseon. Hyujeong thoroughly succeeding the thought of Jinul and being a Dharma heir of Jiuem presented ‘Seon meditation after the study of doctrine(捨敎入禪)’ to settle the disputes. Setting up the general idea of the simultaneous cultivation of Seon and Kyo, he laid emphasis on the superiority of Ganwha Seon by putting the stage of the study of doctrine before Seon meditation practice. After then the Sutra school education came to mean a learning stage before entering the Seon Center. It is innovate that Iryeok(the academic course) at the Sutra school was established and its system was equipped with systematically after C.E. 17 C. Iryeok Course was gradually organized to Preparatory Course, Basic Course, Intermediate Course, Advanced Course, and Graduate Course. And the period of Iryeok Course was also organized from 10~11 years into 4 years. The education of the bhikkhuni was done much later than that of the bhikkhu on a small scale. The first bhikkhuni’s Sutra school was governed with the assistance of the bhikkhus since the modern age and its education was progressed mainly by the bhikkhu lecturers. After a bhikkhuni becoming first the lecturer, the bhikkhuni school was raised to the monastic college like the bhikkhu’s and now is operated as a sizable education place.
