This study is about the effect of time delay of damping force to a quarter-car vibration response. A high-performance magneto-rheological damper and a current driver were used to establish an artificial time delay of the damping force. A limit value of time delay of a damping force that does not aggravate the sprung mass vibration was suggested from the experiments using a quarter simulator.

MR damper can be used in automobile suspensions to drastically improve the ride comfort and drivability. The biggest merit of the MR damper is the faster response time than other CDC dampers. The response time of MR damper is composed of the current development time and fluid response time. In this research shows that the current response time is much improved using H-Bridge in the current controller.

One of the superior performance of the MR damper to other controllable dampers is the fast response time, usually less than 10 ms. This response time can be consisted of the current response time and the mechanical response time. In this paper, the current response time of the MR damper is investigated using Magneto-Static field analysis with specific geometric changes of the damper piston valve.

Performance characteristics of a semi-active suspension system equipped with MR damper are evaluated through the field test of a sport utility vehicle. A mono-tube type MR damper and a H-bridge current controller are designed and manufactured. The damping force of the MR damper can be controlled by input current. The MR damper is installed at rear left side of test vehicle. An on-off sky-hook algorithm using SIMULINK is installed to control the semi-active suspension system. Sensors, current controller, and AutoBox are installed in the test vehicle. Ride comfort of the vehicle is evaluated through bump test responses. The results presented in this work that semi-active suspension svstem with MR damner can be used to improve ride comfort.
