Vol.- No.29 (2)
This paper critically examines a recent volume of Andrew Kliman"s “Temporal Single-system Interpretation”. First, Kliman (2007)"s new concept of “pre-production reproduction cost” is nothing other than another presentation of historical cost in the continuous time framework, and it does not play any role in his explanation of other topics. Second, Kliman (2007)"s refutation of Okishio theorem using a numerical example commits a logical error. Even after correcting the error of the example, it can be shown to have nothing to do with Okishio theorem as such.
Vol.10 No.2
In this paper, we critically examine John Holloway’s recent book, Crack Capitalism. Section 2 notes that Holloway’s ‘abstract labor’ actually indicates the market in general and every form of totality. As a result, it misses the specific analytical implication of the concept of ‘abstract labor’. Contrary to Holloway’s radical discourse, his theory leads to self-consoling political activism. Section 3 discusses the political result of the creation, expansion and multiplication of “cracks” in the capitalist system. It is argued that Holloway’s proposal does not contain any concrete alternatives. In order to approach a politically correct alternative, it is necessary to learn how to articulate and combine various forms of “cracking” capitalism. In this sense, Marx’s politics should be developed further.
Vol.16 No.-
This paper tries to examine how the problem of people`s livelihood is dealt with in recent progressive discourses on the Korean economy. In section 2, we try to reinterpret Park Hyun Chae`s `Theory of Nation-Economy` within the context of the so-called global capitalism. In particular, unlike conventional critiques, it is argued that `National Way of Life` may be interpreted as a concept indicating the `site` where communal requirements are to be raised and solved. In this respect, current Korean economy is in the process of breakdown of the `National Way of Life` at the expense of non-regular workers and small-scale self employed businesses. In section 3, recent progressive discourses on the Korean economy are examined. These discourses have shared elements such as the making of knowledge workers, innovative growth, social integration and the construction of unification of North-South Korean economies. However, it is not clear how these elements can successfully check the breakdown of the `National Way of Life.` In conclusion, it will be emphasized that we need to prioritize publicness and the accumulation of social capital, rather than growth.
