In Quest of the Orbit and Roles of Tea Culture Shown in Mass Media

        노이균 한국일러스아트학회 2015 조형미디어학 Vol.18 No.2

The background to tea is complex and the purpose of this article is to provide a brief anthropological and cultural background about tea-drinking behaviors appearing in mass media, the tea trade and tea culture. This article is subdivided into three major components: the origin of the tea-drinking behavior; the exportation of tea and tea drinking from China to the rest of the world; and the development and roles of a contemporary tea culture in mass media. According to Indian mythology, tea originated in northern India and was transplanted into the Sichuan Province of China in the 1600s. But the Chinese legend tells us that the origin of tea drinking can be traced 5000 years back in China. Like this, there are several theories about the origins of tea. Tea-drinking over every culture was on the whole a hobby of the social life elite. And in some cultures wide-spread tea-drinking is a result of religious behavior. Tea is not yet fully exploited for tourism purposes, but its potential is still great. Tea plays such roles in mass media culture as a healing role in restoring humanity, a connecting role with people, a meaningful role in either breaking the ice among others, a role in clearing up a misunderstanding between each other, and an educational or informative role in enhancing tea’s cultural importance.

A Study on the Effects of Global Violence in Mass Media

        노이균 한국일러스아트학회 2018 조형미디어학 Vol.21 No.1

We are awash in a tide of violent representations such as the world has never seen. There is no escape from the mass-produced mayhem pervading the life space of ever larger areas of the world. Mass media violence must be understood as an indicator of social relationships. Television, for instance, has been seen as one medium among many. The advent of television prompted research into the effects of this new medium in the 1960s. Much of this research has been guided by social learning theory developed by Albert Bandura. Social learning theory suggests that one way in which human beings learn is by the process of modeling. In this regard, the study of global violence in mass media analyzes the degree of correlation between themes of violence in media sources and violence over time.

In Quest of the Orbit of Iconography

        노이균 한국일러스아트학회 2018 조형미디어학 Vol.21 No.2

Iconography, as a branch of art history, studies the identification, description, and the interpretation of the content of images. The word iconography comes from the Greek. A secondary meaning is the production of religious images, called icons. In art history an iconography may also mean a particular depiction of a subject in terms of the content of the image, such as the number of figures used, their placing and gestures. The term is also used in many academic fields other than art history, for example semiotics and media studies. Sometimes distinctions have been made between iconology and iconography, although the definitions, and so the distinction made, varies in modern times.

In Quest of the Orbit of Structuralism -Movements of Literature and Architecture-

        노이균 한국일러스아트학회 2019 조형미디어학 Vol.22 No.2

Structuralism in a general sense is a mode of thought of the 20th century, which came about in different places, at different times and in different fields. The structuralist mode of reasoning has been applied in a diverse range of fields, including anthropology, sociology, psychology, literary criticism and architecture. Structuralism has often been criticized for being ahistorical and for favoring deterministic structural forces over the ability of people to act. As the political turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s began affecting academia, the literary movement of structuralism moved to the center of people’s attention. In the 1980s, it became popular. The architectural structuralism has its origins in the Congres International d’Architecture Moderne[CIAM] after World War II. It is a movement in architecture and urban planning evolved around the middle of the 20th century. Structuralism was a reaction to a lifeless expression of urban planning that ignored the identity of the inhabitants and urban forms. In this article, movements of both literature and architecture shall be examined.

Media Effect on Juvenile Sexuality in Terms of Structuralism

        노이균 한국일러스아트학회 2019 조형미디어학 Vol.22 No.4

In the absence of widespread, effective sex education at home or in schools, television and other media have arguably become the leading source of sex education around the global society today. This is a rather sad commentary, considering that the global media are arguably the most sexually suggestive and irresponsible in the world. The global media titillate their viewers overtly with countless jokes and innuendoes about all aspects of human sexuality. Advertisers are using sex to sell virtually everything from hotel rooms to shampoo. It is considered the media are probably a major force to be reckoned with in considering when teens begin having sex. What changes in the global media would give the global youth a healthier view of sex and sexuality? Readers of this article should keep in mind such a number of possibilities as follows: 1) Widespread advertising of birth control in mainstream media like TV, magazines, and radio 2) Greater responsibility and accountability of mainstream media for producing healthy and accurate messages about sex and sexuality 3) Better taste in advertising 4) Incorporating the principles of media education into existing sex education programs 5) More and better counteradvertising 6) Greater sensitivity of parents to the influence of the media on juvenility 7) More and better research

A Study on the Orbit of Homosexuality in the Global Media

        노이균 한국일러스아트학회 2020 조형미디어학 Vol.23 No.2

Societal attitudes towards same-sex relationships have varied over time and place. It was accepted in some forms in ancient Greece. However, in later cultures influenced by Abrahamic religions of Judaism and Christianity, the law and the church established sodomy as a transgression against divine law or a crime against nature. Many male historical figures, including Socrates, Lord Byron, Edward II, have had terms such as gay or bisexual applied to them; some scholars, such as Michel Foucault, have regarded this as anachronistic. A common thread of constructionist argument is that no one in antiquity or the Middle Ages experienced homosexuality as an exclusive, permanent, or defining mode of sexuality. John Boswell has countered this argument by citing ancient Greek writings by Plato, which describe individuals exhibiting exclusive homosexuality. Whether exclusive or not, or permanent or not, the trend of homosexuality along with heterosexuality and bisexuality in mass media shown in the modern global tends to show quite a different peculiarity compared with those of ancient Greece and specific religious groups such as Abrahamic religions, Indian religions, and East Asian religions such as Confucianism and Taoism.

In Quest of the Orbit of Inanna, the Archetype of Erotica

        노이균 한국일러스아트학회 2021 조형미디어학 Vol.24 No.2

Erotica is in a broad sense any literary or artistic work that deals substantively with subject matter that is erotically stimulating or sexually arousing but in a strict sense is not generally considered to be pornographic. Erotic art may use any artistic form to depict erotic content, including painting, sculpture, drama, film, or music. Erotica has become a genre in its own right. Among the oldest surviving examples of erotic depictions are Paleolithic cave paintings and carvings. Scholars have traditionally interpreted all these depictions as scenes of ritual sex, but they are more likely to be associated with the cult Inanna, the goddess of sex and prostitution. She was later worshipped under the name of Ishtar, who was associated with the planet Venus. During the 19th century such as Impressionism and Realism erotic elements have been broadened as a niche genre. Whether or not an instance of erotica is obscene depends on the standards of the community in which it is displayed. Similar difficulties in distinguishing between erotica and obscenity have been also found in every legal system in the world.

An Artistic Study on the Periodical Nudity

        노이균 한국일러스아트학회 2022 조형미디어학 Vol.25 No.2

The nude figure is a tradition in Western art, and has been used to express ideals of male and female beauty and other human qualities. It was a central preoccupation of ancient Greek art, and after a semi-dormant period in the Middle Ages returned to a central position in Western art with the Renaissance. Athletes, dancers, and warriors are depicted to express human energy and life, and nudes in various poses may express basic or complex emotions such as pathos. In one sense, a nude is a work of fine art. Unclothed figures often also play an important part in other types of art, such as history painting, including allegorical and religious art, portraiture, or the decorative arts.

        Symbolism and Power on Logos

        노이균 한국일러스아트학회 2014 조형미디어학 Vol.17 No.1

Advertising is the greatest art form of the twentieth century. In other words, we live in a visual culture, a culture permeated with visual images from advertising, television, movies, and magazines that unconsciously shape lifestyle and even world view. Logos, especially the visual symbols used by brand products, have become so familiar that they come to mind by just mentioning them. We no longer perceive logos as simple trademarks but, rather, as cultural symbols. This kind of power can be called logo power. The term logo emerged in the twentieth century to describe the actual design of trademarks and other distinguishing marks used by manufacturers. However the goal of contemporary logo design is much more complex than was the goal of the makers of the trademarks. Many logos are designed with archetypal qualities. The Apple logo is one of these. Logos are so intuitively appealing and effective as a marketing strategy. Logos, however, are used not only by advertisers but also by politicians and noncommercial enterprises. Many logos are pictographs, resonating with mythic or occult symbolism. This mythic power makes logo power march on around us. Logos play a significant religious or sacred role in our consuming passions.

『실낙원』과 『멕베스』에 나타난 선과 악의 대립적 이중구조 연구

        노이균 한국고전중세르네상스영문학회 2012 중세근세영문학 Vol.22 No.1

According to Tillyard and Bradley structure plays an important role in the literary works. Structure is a concept including both content and form so far as they are organized for an aesthetic purpose. The work of art is, then, considered as a whole system of signs, or structure of signs, serving a specific aesthetic purpose. To achieve an aesthetic purpose in his work Paradise Lost, Milton uses such conflicting dual structure as good and evil imagery. Satan stands in the middle of evil imagery and so does man in the middle of good imagery. Via his work he tries to announce the fact to the public that good becomes evil, and vice versa and good is always apt to be exposed to evil. He uses figures such as Satan and man for an aesthetic purpose. In Paradise Lost evil imagery denotes death, sin, and passion and good imagery indicates life, virtue, and reason. Milton puts an emphasis on the power of Christ and Protestant humanism to retrieve reason from irrational passion which is prevailing all over the human history. Shakespeare also accelerates the dramatic effect in Macbeth by using such opposing dual structure as good and evil imagery. Darkness resides in the middle of evil imagery and so does brightness in the middle of good imagery. Shakespeare is more metaphysical than Milton in dealing with good and evil imagery because he breaks this conflicting dual structure into blood and milk. In the drama Macbeth evil imagery including darkness and blood signifies death, sin, and ambition which is considered as passion and good imagery comprising brightness and milk tells us life, virtue, and conscience which is equivalent to reason.
