이슬람권 국가에서는 1960-70년대를 거치며 이슬람식 가치를 개인적 삶과 공적 영역의 중심부로 위치시키고자 하는 움직임이 발생했으며, 이는 서구식 제도에 대한 재평가를 촉진시켰다. 이전까지 상당수 이슬람 국가에서 수용했던 서구식 제도를 새로운 각도에서 바라보려는 시도가 이루어짐에 따라 서구식 민주주의와 자본주의에 대한 비판이 비등해졌고 이슬람에 부합하는 대안적 정치경제체계를 모색하려는 이슬람화(Islamization) 움직임이 가시화되었다. 이 글의 목적은 인도네시아에서 현재까지 진행되어 온 경제 활동의 이슬람화의 전개과정과 변화의 양상을 연구하는 것이다. 기존 연구의 문제점을 보완하기 위해 이를 역사적인 시각에서 검토할 것이며, 금융뿐만 아니라 경제생활 일반에서 나타나는 특성 역시 분석할 것이다. 이 연구를 통해 얻을 수 있는 인도네시아의 이슬람 경제의 특징과 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경제 활동의 이슬람화는 이슬람 부흥이라는 종교적 흐름의 일부로서 진행되었기 때문에 앞으로의 전개 방향 역시 사회 전반에서 차지하는 이슬람의 위상 변화와 함께 검토되어야 할 것이다. 둘째, 이슬람식 경제 개념은 금융 분야에서 처음 정착된 후 소비 분야로 확산되었으며, 향후 보다 넓은 경제 활동이 이슬람식 시각에서 평가되고 실천될 것이라 예상된다. 셋째, 인도네시아에서의 이슬람 경제 발전은 정부와 정치권이 아닌 민간 부문의 이슬람 세력에 의해 주도되었기 때문에 이슬람식 경제 제도가 급속히 도입되기보다는 점진적으로 확산되었고 그것의 적용 분야나 수용 정도 역시 영역별로 불균등한 모습을 보였다. 또한, 이슬람식 경제 활동이 비(非)이슬람식 경제 활동을 대체할 체계라기보다는 보완적인 성격의 것으로 이해될 수 있었기 때문에 커다란 사회적 논란이나 갈등을 수반하지 않은 채 수용되었다. In the 1960s and 1970s, Islamic countries having undergone the process of Westernization from the early 20th century witnessed a strong movement to locate Islamic values at the center of personal and public life, a phenomenon commonly called ‘Islamic resurgence’. This movement highlighted the importance of religious duties of Muslims, strengthened Muslim identity and prompted reevaluation of Western ideas and practices. As Western political and economic institutions were appraised from critical perspectives, democracy and capitalism were criticized as unIslamic, and attempts to look for alternative ways to Islamize economic and political institutions were initiated. The purpose of this paper is to examine the process and consequences of Islamizing economic activities in Indonesia. For this, a historical analysis on the ways economy has been viewed by Indonesian Muslims is carried out. Not only developments in the financial sector but in the general economic activities are to be investigated in this paper. In the second part of this paper, the ways Indonesian Muslim community has evaluated capitalistic economic institution of bank and the role of Islam in economic activities are to be examined. In the next section, development of Islamic economy in the financial sector is to be analyzed, including Islamic bank, insurance, stock market, obligation and pawning. In the final section, the process of and characteristics in Islamization of economic activities, especially in consumption is investigated.
