Unlike exterior part, scratch resistance is important property for automotive interior part since the drivers touch all the time. Visible scratched surface will adversely affect aesthetic appearance of the automotive interior part. So the quantitative characterization of scratch is essential. Scratch behaviors of interior trims is affected by many different factors. In this study, the main focus is to find the possible scratch factors in field. In addition, the testing method is standardized to quantify the scratch behaviors.

Physical and chemical properties of high brightness waterborne metallic paint for automotive plastic interior were investigated. High brightness waterborne metallic paint with metallic flake made by physical vapor deposition showed good flop index, and polyacrylate resin with high glass transition temperature had better physical properties on long term reliability test. In according to painting conditions of this paint, flop index was highly influenced by humidity of paint booth and NV (Non Volatile) of the paint. High brightness waterborne metallic paint satisfied all of the reliability specifications in automotive interior.

The global automotive companies are studying for using non-painted polymer to save cost and reduce volatile organic compounds, recently. In this study, scratch behaviors of non-painted polymer has been investigated. Especially the scratch characterization of polypropylene with respect of parameters, such as component of polypropylene, color, emboss, and test method, are reviewed. In addition, the approach for improving the scratch resistance of polypropylene is also discussed.
