서간체 소설의 문학교육적 의미 ― <제야>, <순례자들은 왜 돌아오지 않는가>를 중심으로

이 연구는 현대사회에서 ‘편지’와 ‘서간체 소설’이 지니는 문화적 가치를 바탕으로 서간체 소설의 문학교육적 의미를 탐색하는 연구이다. 서간체 소설은 편지글의 형식적·내용적 자질을 취하는 문학 장르이다. 이 연구는 서간체 소설이 특정 시대의 장르가 아니라 1920년대부터 현대에 이르기까지 생산, 향유되고 있는 장르라는 점에 주목하였다. 염상섭의 <제야>, 김초엽의 <순례자들은 왜 돌아오지 않는가>를 예시로 분석하여 서간체 소설의 장르적 특성을 탐색하였다. 편지가 문학적으로 형상화되는 과정에서 나타난 서간체 소설의 형식적 자질은 액자식 구성, 편지에 대한 직접 명시, 편지 형식의 차용으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그리고 서간체 소설의 내용적 자질은 고백서사와 개인의 내밀성, 자아 개념과 자아정체성의 성립으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 이와 같은 장르적 특성을 바탕으로 서간체 소설의 문학교육적 가치를 고찰하고 문학교육에서의 활용 방안을 탐색하고자 하였다. 서간체 소설을 활용한 문학교육의 가능성을 문학 지식 습득과 문학 능력 증진을 위한 문학교육, 자기 성찰·계발 역량과 의사소통 역량 신장을 위한 문학교육, 작문교육·매체교육과 연계한 문학교육의 측면에서 제시하였다. 이 연구는 즉시성과 유동성으로 대표되는 현대사회에 서간체 소설이 지니는 문화적 의미와 교육적 효용을 새롭게 밝히고 문학교육적 활용 방안을 모색하였다는 데에 의의가 있다. 향후 교육적 시사점을 도출하는 것에서 나아가 실제적인 교육 내용과 방안을 마련하여 구체적인 실천태를 마련하기 위한 후속 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다. This study explores the literary educational meanings of the episto lary novel genre based on the cultural values of “letter” and “epistolary novel” in modern society. Epistolary novel is a literary genre that takes on the formal and other content qualities of a letter. This study noted that the genre is not limited to a particular era, but one that has been produced and enjoyed since the 1920s to the present day. The genre characteristics of the epistolary novel were explored by analyzing “New Year’s Eve” by Yum Sang-seop and “Why Don’t the Pilgrims Come Back” by Kim Cho-yup as examples. The formal qualities of an epistolary novel in the pro cess of literary embodiment were divided into frame composition, direct representation of a letter, and borrowing the default format of the letter. The content qualities of the epistolary novels were divided into confes sional narratives, the individual intimacy, the formation of self-concepts and self-identification. Based on these genre characteristics, it was intend ed to consider the literary value of the epistolary novel and explore the use of it in literary education. The possibilities for literary education using epistolary novels was presented in literary education to acquire literary knowledge, literary education to increase self-observation and develop ment and communication competence and improve literary ability, and literary education in conjunction with writing education and media edu cation. This study is meaningful in that it newly revealed the cultural mean ing and educational utility of epistolary novels in a modern society rep resented by immediacy and liquidity and sought ways to utilize literary education. To derive future educational implications, further research will be carried out to develop practical educational content and concrete practices.
