To meet the world's ever stringent environment regulation, the focus of current research on diesel engines are to reduce the size and to enhance the power of engine at the same time. Such requirement inherently increases the pressure of the combustion chamber. Under this high pressure, the operational pressure range of the current aluminum piston reaches to the limit requiring a piston. In this study, in order to analyze the change of power, fuel consumption and emitted gas characteristics due to weight and heat transfer characteristics difference between the aluminum piston and the steel forged piston, fuel consumption and emitted gas characteristics are analyzed using a engine dynamometer. Results indicate that the combustion characteristics of the articulated steel forged piston are similar to that the united steel forged piston.

Recently, the diesel engine development is actively progressing due to influence on environment pollution and global warming. In this study, in order to analyze the change of power, fuel consumption and exhaust gas performance due to weight and heat transfer characteristics between the aluminum piston, the articulated and the uni-steel forged piston, fuel consumption and exhaust gas characteristics are analyzed using a engine and chassis dynamometer. Results indicate that the combustion characteristics of the articulated steel forged piston are similar to that the uni-steel forged piston.
