The effect of uncertainty and nonlinearity is an important aspect in a control design of a highly nonlinear plant. This paper presents an approach to address uncertainty and nonlinearity by augmenting an existing controller with a neural network based adaptive element. The approach has advantage in the sense that augmentation of neural network does not require to design a new controller architecture like an inversion controller. The approach is illustrated in an application of normal acceleration control for guided munitions.

This paper presents an approach to combine £₁ adaptive controller with feedback linearization, which extends the applicability of the £₁ adaptive controller to a wider class of systems. The £₁ adaptive controller guarantees the asymptotic tracking convergence and the transient performance of the tracking error. The feedback linearization transforms a nonlinear plant into a linear time invariant form. The asymptotic tracking convergence is shown by the use of Lyapunov stability analysis and Barbalat’s lemma.

A design of attitude controller for a tiltrotor is presented augmenting L1 adaptive control, neural networks, and feedback linearization. The neural networks compensate for the modeling error caused by the lack of knowledge of tiltrotor dynamics while the L1 adaptive control allows high adaptation gains in adaptation laws thereby, satisfying tracking performance requirement. The efficacy of this control methodology is illustrated in high-fidelity nonlinear simulation of a tiltrotor by flying the tiltrotor in different flight modes from where the L1 adaptive controller with neural networks is originally designed for.

A damage imposed on an unmanned aerial vehicle changes the flight dynamic characteristics, and makes difficult for a conventional controller based on undamaged dynamics to stabilize the vehicle with damage. This paper presents a neural network based adaptive control method that guarantees stable control performance for an unmanned aerial vehicle even with damage on the main wing. Additionally, Pseudo Control Hedging (PCH) is combined to prevent control performance degradation by actuator characteristics. Asymmetric dynamic equations for an aircraft are chosen to describe motions of a vehicle with damage. Aerodynamic data from wind tunnel test for an undamaged model and a damaged model are used for numerical validation of the proposed control method. The numerical simulation has shown that the proposed control method has robust control performance in the presence of wing damage.

In this paper, we focus on planing avoidance control for a supercavitating underwater vehicle based on the potential function method. The planing margin can be calculated using the relative position between the cavity center and vehicle center at the end of the vehicle. The planing margin was transformed into a limit variable such as the pitch angle and yaw angle limit. To prevent the vehicle attitude from exceeding the limit variable, a potential function based planing envelope protection method was proposed. The planing envelope protection system overrides commands from the tracking controller, and the vehicle attitude converges to a desired angle, in which the potential function is minimized. Numerical simulations were performed to analyze the physical feasibility and performance of the proposed method. The results showed that the proposed methods eliminated the planing, allowing the vehicle to follow tracking commands.

A modulation transfer function(MTF) tree is established to estimate the overall MTF of an observation satellite and to analyze the image performance. Basic MTF models relevant to each MTF tree component are represented as mathematical relationship between optics-structural dynamics, thermal deformation, attitude and dynamic characteristics of a satellite and the effects due to the space environment. The Basic MTF models consist of diffraction limited MTF with central obscuration, aberration, defocus, line-of-sight(LOS) jitter, linear motion, detector integration, and so forth. Performance estimation is demonstrated for a virtual earth-observation satellite in order to validate the constructed modeling method. The proposed models enable the system engineers to calculate the overall system MTF and to determine the crucial design parameters that affect the image performance in the conceptual design phase of an observation satellite.
