Over the past several years, there has been increased interest in reformulated and alternative diesel fuels to control emissions and provide energy independence. Biodiesel, which can be generated from natural renewable sources such as new or used vegetable oils or animal fats, may have the potential to reduce our nation's reliance on imported oil and to improve air quality. In addition, it is compatible with diesel fuel in compression ignition engines, meaning that an existing diesel engine can be fueled by biodiesel blends. In this paper, the test results of fuel economy and exhaust emissions of neat diesel oil, neat biodiesel and biodiesel blends (20 vol. % biodiesel and 50 vol. % biodiesel) are presented using three conventional diesel-engine vehicles. Chassis dynamometer tests showed that PM, Smoke, THC and CO emissions were decreased as the blending rations of biodiesel to diesel oil increased, on the other hand NOx emission was slightly increased because of the oxygen content in biodiesel. Also, the biodiesel blends yielded lower fuel economy than that of diesel oil because of lower hearting value of biodiesel.

A diesel engine is one of the major prime movers owing to its high thermal efficiency. But due to the recent attention for the environmental pollution, the emissions of diesel engine became a important problem. So it is needed to understand the characteristics of diesel spray injected into a combustion chamber. Because the diesel combustion is strongly controlled by a fuel spray injected into a combustion chamber.

Natural gas is one of the most promising alternative fuels for automotive vehicles, because it can reduce exhaust emissions than gasoline and diesel fuels, and can be used in conventional engines with a little modification. However, natural gas varies in composition between the originating fields and may be further modified due to processing prior to transmission. These variations are known to affect engine performance and emissions through changes in fuel metering characteristics and knock resistance of the fuel.
The objective of this study is to examine the effect of natural gas composition on vehicle performance such as fuel economy, driveability and exhaust emissions. Analysis are made of using 6 types of natural gas fuels, which are selected in consideration of the variation in fuel composition on the worldwide market. These results may be utilized to develop natural gas engine and/or to establish the fuel standard in refuelling station.
