Although live fish are transported through various means, aircraft are predominantly used for transporting fish over long-distances to minimize travel time and maintain freshness. However, air transportation has a limited loading capacity and weight, and is more expensive than other transportation methods. Therefore, to reduce transportation costs, studies have been conducted on live fish containers that are installed with large water tanks for use in long-distance transportation methods. Accordingly, the most effective method is decreasing the activity of fish at low water temperatures, thereby reducing contamination from sources such as excrement. In this study, the optimum low water temperature at which live fish can be maintained during transportation in a container is determined, using an image processing algorithm that includes a three-dimensional independent vision system is proposed that can measure the fishes’ swimming speed. The swimming speed of the red seabream according to water temperature was thus measured in real time and the results verified the proposed algorithm’s effectiveness.
