The purpose of this study was to establish of exercise intensity for improving cardiorespiratory function to 60-min steady state exercise among three exercise intensities; belowAT (the intensity 30 watts below AT), atAT, and aboveAT (the intensity 30 watts above AT). Nine healthy, male (n=9; 22.3±1.6 yrs) subjects performed each 60-min continuous exercise on the cycle ergometer. Oxygen uptake (VO2), ventilation (VE), heart rate (HR), ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), and blood pressure were measured throughout each of the three exercise intensities 60 min exercise. VO2 remained essentially unchanged during belowAT. VO2 during the exercise at atAT averaged 31.4±4.1 ml/kg/min for the first 10 min and for the final 10 min, and the difference became statistically significant when repeated-measures ANOVA was applied. However, in VO2 atAT condition was 25.1±3.2 and 28.4±2.7 ml/kg/min, respectively, and the increase in VO2 was not significant. Furthermore, the average values of systolic blood pressure (176.2±19.0 mmHg), and V˙ E (63.7± 9.3 1/min) during atAT exercise were significantly higher than those measured during atAT condition. These results suggest that the prolonged exercise at atAT level intensity probably induces unfavorable physiologic stress. Exercise at atAT level intensity may be optimal for untrained or sedentary.
