Reye's syndrome is a virus associated biphasic disease that causes acute encephalopathy and fatty degeneration in infants and children. Epidermiologic and experimental data support the hypothesis that is a multifactorial disease of modern civilization. Especially a relationship between Reye's syndrme and prior salicylate exposure has been proposed for many years. The clinical similarities between saliylate intoxication and Reye's syndrome fueled interest in a potential association. Despite serious evidence incriminating aspirin in the etiology of Reye's syndrome, it is mandatory that physicians realize that the absense of aspirin exposure does not exclude the diagnosis of Reye's syndrome.

The antihyperglycemic effect of some crude drugs were evaluated in epinephrine induced hyperglycemic rats. Hyperglycemia was induced by the intraperitoneal injection of epinephrine as 1.0mg/kg. Crude drugs (Ephedrae herba, Artactylodes rhizoma and Lycii cortex radicis) were extracted to prepare the water extract, which was orally administered by depending on ech dose (0.1~4.0g/kg body weight). Blood glucose level was determined by the administration time course of crude drugs. The oral administration of each extract at 0 and 3hrs before epinephrine injection prevented the hyperglycemia induced by epinephrine, this effects showed the dose-dependence (0.6~4.0g/kg body weight).

Hyperglycemic effect of Atractylodes Rhizoma was investigated. The extract was prepared by the cold extraction with water, which was dialyzed. The dialysate (AT-F) was orally administered to streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic rats. Single oral administration of AT-F decreased the blood glucose level in hyperglycemic rat from 361±32 to 226±29. The oral administration of AT-F into the epinephrine-induced hyperglycemic rats was significantly (p<0. 01) decreased the blood glucose level in the both normal and diabetic rats, which reflected the inhibition of α₂-adrenergic stimulation on the pancreatic β-cell and the glycogenolysis in the liver. And from this study it was suggested that AT-F would potentiate the hypoglycemic activity by the stimulation of α₂-receptor on β-cells for insulin secretion.

From the ethyl acetate fraction of the methanol extract of the fruits of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten, two dihydroflavonois were isolated and identified as (+)-trans-dihydrokaempferol (1) and (+)-trans-dihydroquercetin (2) by spectroscopic methods.
