This thesis is on taboo tales in Japan. The taboo was not originally distinguished between awe and avoidance but had one-dimension characteristic. But by being gradually generalized, it appeared as two-dimension behavior of 'awe to the divine and the avoidance of the negative'. It can be found 'Gosagi'- the historical book recording ancient happenings, where the ritual to avoid death from being awed to it was passed on. The religious quality was gradually gone in the taboo ritual after the World War Ⅱ, but it, we can find, remains in “Jijinje” and “Kwanhonsangje” ceremony. This taboo is reflected in the language, which is “words avoided”. They are the substitute words we use instead of original words. I straightened up the happening of taboo in Japan in the first chapter. I speculated on how taboo was classified in its characteristic in the second chapter. I speculated on examples of taboo characteristics in Japan by classifying them into 8 categories of body, state, things, deed, palce, date, time, dream, words avoided. But taboo had so much to do with our daily lives that its original meaning was very difficult to find. I couldn't deal with current taboo which is happening nowadays in this thesis. The more supplement should be needed about the relationship and competition between old taboo and current taboo afterward.
