The species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblage in the coastal water off Gadeok-do, Korea were studied using the monthly trawled samples through a year of 1998. During the study period, 110 species of fishes from 57 families were collected. Repomucenus valenciennei, Thryssa kammalensis, Leiognathus nuchalis and Zoarces gilli dominated the fish assemblage throughout the year, and were responsible for 57.6% and 37.2% in the number of individuals and biomass, respectively. Fish species of secondary importance in abundance were Sillago japonica, Apogon lineatus, Pholis fangi, Engraulis japonicus, Thryssa adelae, Pholis nebulosa, Conger myriaster, Liparis tanakai, Acentrogobius pflaumii, Limanda yokohamae, Chaeturichthys hexanema, Erisphex pottii and Cynoglossus abbreviatus. Higher numbers of species were collected in spring and autumn than in summer and winter. Abundance was high in spring and autumn, and low in summer and winter. Species diversity indices showed that the fish assemblage was more diverse in autumn than any other seasons.

The seasonal distribution and abundance of larval fishes in the central and southern surface waters of the East Sea were investigated seasonally during 2011 and 2012. During the study period, the larvae of 39 species belonging to 26 families were collected. The most abundant species were Engraulisjaponicus, which accounted for 97.5% of the total number of individuals collected. Scornberjaponicus, Clupea pallasii, Qhroniis notatus, Cottidae sp., and coryphaena hippurus accounted for 1.7% of the total.The number of species, number of individuals, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the season. The peak number of species and individuals occurred in September and May, respectively. The larvae of the main species displayed a distinct spatial distribution and seasonal occurrence patterns. E.japonicus and C. notatus widely distributed throughout the study area. During summer and autumn, S. japonicus and C. hippurus were abundant in southern and offshore regions. C. pallasii occurred only in the southern region during winter. The seasonal occurrence and patterns of distribution of the larvae of main species seems were correlated with surface water temperature.

인공호수인 시화호는 사화지구 개발사업의 일환으로 1994년 1월에 형성되었다. 이 호수 지역은 시화방조제가 건설되기 이전에는 전형적인 해양환경이었으나, 방조제 건설 이후 해수유입이 중단되면서 담수화가 진행되고 있으며, 담수화 과정에서 많은 생태계 변화를 겪고 있다. 또한 시화호 인근 반월공단 및 안산시에서 각종 오폐수가 지속적으로 이 호수에 유입되고 있기 때문에 오염에 따른 여러 가지 부작용도 발생되고 있다. 본 연구 그룹은 시화호 및 주변해역에 대한 생태계 조사를 종합적으로 실시함으로써 인위적인 환경변화가 주변 생태계에 어떤 영향을 미치는가를 밝혔다. 이들 연구 결과를 이번 호에 모아서 싣는다(박 등, 1997; 한 등, 1997; 최 등, 1997; 박과허, 1997; 류 등, 1997; 이 등, 1997; 최 등, 1997). The man-made lake, Shihwa, was constructed in January, 1994 as a part of the 'development project of the Shihwa area'. The lake area was a typical coastal ocean environment before the construction, but after constructing the dikes to block the sea water inflow, the lake is in the process of becoming a freshwater lake, and faces various ecological changes. Due to the polluted water inflow from the neighboring industrial complex and Ansan city, many negative effects appear. In this group study we conducted integrated ecosystem investigations of the lake Shihwa and the adjacent coastal area in order to find out how the ecosystem is controlled by artificial changes of the lake environment. The results are compiled in the following several articles of this issue: Park et ai. (1997), Han et al. (1997). Choi et ai. (1997), Park and Huh (1997), Ryu et at. (1997), Lee et al. (1997).

Feeding habits of Pseudoblennius cottoides collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay from January 1994 to December 1994 were studied. Pseudoblennius cottoides was a carnivore which mainly consumed fishes, caridean shrimps, and amphipods. Its diets included small quantities of tanaids, copepods, isopods, mysids, and polychaetes. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Fishes were heavily selected as the body size of P. cottoides increases. Fishes and caridean shrimps were major prey organisms for all seasons.

N/A The monthly collected fish samples by three sides fyke nets were analyzed in order to study species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblage in the coastal water off Gadeok-do, Korea through a year of 1998. During the study period, a total of 136 fish species of 69 families were collected. Trachurus japonicus, Konosirus punctatus and Mugil cephalus were three dominant species in the fish assemblage and they accounted for 63.7% and 83.1% in the number of individuals and biomass, respectively. Fish species of secondary importance in abundance were Leiognathus nuchalis, Takifugu niphobles, Scomber japonicus, Trichiurus lepturus, Chelon affinis, Apogon lineatus, Nibea albiflora and Acanthopagru schlegeli. The highest number of species was collected in July and the lowest in February. Abundance was high in spring, and low in winter. Species diversity indices showed that the fish assemblage was less diverse in spring than any other seasons.

Feeding habits of Syngnathus schlegeli were studied by using samples collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay, Korea from January 1994 to December 1994. Syngnathus schlegeli was a carnivore which mainly consumed copepods and epiphytal gammarid amphipods. Its diets included small quantities of caprellid amphipods, tanaids and mysids. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. In its initial feeding stage, copepods were major food organisms. However, gammarid amphipods were heavily selected with the incretment of the fish size. Food availability in the eelgrass bed changed seasonally. Its main food items were changed according to variations of food availability. Copepods were mainly consumed in spring, and gammarid amphipods in summer and fall.

Feeding habits of Sebastes inermis collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay from January 1994 to December 1994 were studied. S. inermis(1-9㎝ SL) was a carnivore which mainly consumed amphipods(gammarid amphipods and caprellid amphipods) and copepods. Its diets included small quantities of caridean shrimps, crabs, gastropods, and fishes. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. In an initial stage, copepods were major food organisms. However, amphipods were heavily selected as the body size of S. inermis increases. Although consumption of copepods increased during spring, amphipods were major prey organisms for all seasons.
