This study investigated the influences of moral justification of executives on their business ethics using Bandura’s social cognitive theory as a theoretical framework. Japanese students (N=137) assumed that they were “executives” in a manufacturing company, and their company had “high” or “low” financial prospects. The “low-prospect executive” students showed high moral justification and low ethical orientation compared to the “high-prospect executives” students. The findings suggest that the moral disengagement mechanism(Bandura, 1996) can explain the psychological mechanism underlying the Japanese corporate transgressions.
