      • 英語發音 敎育의 理論과 實際

        兪武根 관동대학교 1991 關大論文集 Vol.19 No.1

In English pronunciation classes, if we want to be good English teachers, we had better use English phonemes and minimal pairs progressively from words to phrases and sentences. Students can understand the importance of these concepts when we English teachers present good examples to them. Since the purpose of language is simply to be understood by those to whom we speak, we must make the best of these linguistic terms to communicate with each other. Students sometimes pronounce /v/ as /b/ and /p/ as /f/ in some Southeast Asian countries including Korea. Some Spanish students also tend to confuse /m/ and /n/, because of the lack of a clear distinction between the two consonants in Spanish. And some Chinese tend to pronounce /ŋ/ as /n/ because of their Chinese-speaking habits. Many Koreans usually speak English well, but they speak it just like Korean because of their Korean-speaking habits. As we know well Korean is a syllable-timed rhythm language. On the other hand, English is a stress-timed rhythm language. Therefore, many Koreans speak English just like their native language, Korean. Some Americans sometimes pronounce "WANT To" /want tu/ as /wan(???)/ and write "WANNA" instead of "WANT TO". In the English pronunciation classes, we teachers must teach our students correct standard pronunciation and help them to understand the various kinds of different pronunciation used in English-speaking countries all over the world, for they can communicate only when they understand what other people say.

      • 黑人 英語의 文法的 特性에 關한 硏究

        兪武根 관동대학교 1994 關大論文集 Vol.22 No.1

In recent curriculums in English it is greatly emphasized that 'fluency and communicative function' should be more important than accuracy or grammar. With a view to communication with foreigners, every student has to be able to understand not only American English but Indian English, Australian English, British English, and Black English. Especially, Black English is more popular than Indian English, Australian English, and the others. So we must teach students the 'hypercorrection' and 'multiple negation' in Black English. I propose we should publish a "Black English Grammar" including some of the differences of Black English, because the different grammar may sometimes be helpful in communication with Black Americans.

      • 早期 英語敎育의 當面課題

        兪武根 관동대학교 1985 關大論文集 Vol.13 No.1

In fact, we Korean English teachers have overemphasized Written English in English teaching of secondary schools, but it is true that both written English and spoken English are similar to each other. In other words, written English is English and so is spoken English. If we overemphasize only one part, the other will he surely undependable. Therefore, we should always make an equal point of written English and spoken English. In teaching spoken English, we must give the students the chances of repetitional drills and of continuous learning English for a long period of time, that is to bay, it takes much time for the Korean students to master spoken English in secondary schools, and it is very difficult for them to speak English fluently. By reason of these, I think it necessary to give them Early English Education in elementary schools of Korea, and I suggest Early English Education should be given them as follows : 1. It is desirable to give the students Early English Education from the 3rd grade. 2. It is necessary to establish foreign language schools of an elementary school course and of a middle school course. 3. KBS-3TV should televise Early English Education programs from 16:00 till 17:30 every day. 4. Simple loan words suitable for the elementary school students have to be given in the elementary school textbooks.

      • 黑人英語 音韻에 關한 硏究

        兪武根 관동대학교 1993 關大論文集 Vol.21 No.1

I have explained that American Standard English and Black English are different from each other in pronunciation and spelling. Of course, I have proposed we should teach students American Standard English pronunciation. But we have to be able to understand Black English, too, for Black Americans usually speak it. Though some people urge that Black English is vulgar or uneducated English, I don`t think so. I suggest that we should teach students the differences of Black English, because different spellings and pronunciations may sometimes be helpful in communicating with each other. I emphasize greatly that "A Dictionary of Black English" should be published soon in order to facilitate Korean students communication with foreigners including Black Americans. This dictionary would surely be very helpful in communicating with Black English speakers.

      • LANGUGAE LABORATORY 授業의 理論과 實際

        兪武根 관동대학교 1989 關大論文集 Vol.17 No.2

Some scholars have taken a dark view of English language laboratory class in Korea, but in my view, English language laboratory class is a very practical way of teaching Korean students English, since there is not yet any better practical alternative. Most Korean students also think that English language laboratory class is not efficient. It is natural that they should think so, because they can`t understand fully what the native speaker says. Why is this so? It is because they usually have only one English language laboratory class a week. They cannot be good English listeners and speakers through such a short training. In fact, to become a fluent English speaker, we must be proficient in recognizing the native speaker`s English prounciation. If you are a good English listener, you can be a good English speaker. As the "No work, no pay." goes, so goes "No listening, no speaking." Therefore, when we increase the Korean students` English laboratory classes, they can become good English speakers and they will think that English laboratory class is very efficient. In order to develop the student`s auditory memory, we should have a complete set of audio-visual aids in each school as a help to the students in becoming good English speakers.

The knowledge of the parasitic sounds, which are parasitic consonants and parasitic vowels, enables the English learners to pronounce English easily, but is also gives them a problem, for it makes unnecessary homephones. So, parasitic consonants or parasitic vowels in English pronunciation should be avoided to prevent the English learners from confusing speakers English. Many English learners in Korea pronounce 'hello' and 'Helen' as 〔hellou〕 and 〔hellen〕, but their standard pronunciations are 〔helou〕 and 〔helen〕. Needless consonant additions in English pronunciation should be also avoided, for such additions may simply confuse speakers' understanding of English. Addition rules are only optional. Standard English pronunciation is always the best key to understanding good English. Therefore, it is highly recommended that English teachers should teach the correct pronunciation from the beginning.

      • 韓國 英語學習者의 音韻上의 誤謬에 關한 硏究

        兪武根 관동대학교 1998 關大論文集 Vol.26 No.1

English learners in Korea are apt to make phonological errors of spelling pronunciation. Korean and English words are different from each other in pronunciation, for the Korean language has phonetic letters and English has ideographic spellings. We need not phoneticize the Korean words to read them, but English words must be phoneticized. In order to communicate with one another by speech, the Koreans learning English should, of course, use the standard pronunciation. Many English learners in Korea pronounce comma and gamma as [komma] and [gamma], but their standard pronunciations are [kama] and [g?ma]. The standard pronunciations of 'solo' and 'ozone' are [soulou] and [ouzoun], and most English learners in Korea pronounce 'solo' and 'ozone' as [solo] and [ozon] respectively. Besides, many Koreans learning English pronounce 'Helen' and 'melon' as [hellen] and [mellon]. Spelling pronunciations should be avoided, for such phonological errors in English as spelling pronunciations and pronunciations of double consonants may simply confuse speakers' understanding of English. Standard pronunciation is always the key to the best communication in English.
