Currently, people have more eco-consciousness, and are interested in environmentally-friendly systems and energy-saving society. Secondary batteries are used for energy storage devices using energy with high efficiency as exemplified by hybrid cars. In this regard, lithium-ion secondary batteries have attracted much attention, because their high energy density. Degradation of the electrodes through electrolyte ion intercalation has become recognized as a serious problem for the stability and lifetime of lithium-ion batteries. For solving this problem, measurements of the electrode degradation are needed. In this study, we applied Laser Raman micro-spectrometry to observe the change carbon morphology caused by the degradation. This method requires no sample pretreatment but only irradiating the sample with a laser beam. Lithium ion secondary batteries are required to be sealed under an inert gas to prevent Li ignition. For this reason, we newly designed a measurement cell to allow irradiating the carbon electrode with a laser and measuring under an inert gas. (Figure 1)
