Indigenous Tourism as a Poverty Eradication Tool of Orang Asli in Malaysia

This paper presents the role of indigenous tourism to reduce the poverty among the Orang Asli community in Malaysia. Preliminary study was conducted at two of the well established indigenous tourism destinations in Malaysia; Carey Island and Cameron Highlands. Naturalistic inquiry which was used as the qualitative data collection method helped the researchers to understand the host-tourism relationship before conducting further investigation. The current state of poverty of the minority group is also highlighted in this study. An initial investigation done at the Kampung Sungai Bumbon at Carey Island reveals that the outsiders` influence is highly significant at the village to run the tourism activities successfully. However, the community feels that their culture and tourism business has been exploited by the outsiders. It is hoped that the findings of this study will contribute to existing literature in the indigenous tourism field that could enhance the sector into a more profitable business for the indigenous community.

Local Community`s Perception of Tourism in Redang Island, Malaysia

This paper presents a preliminary study of the local community`s perception on eco tourism in Redang Island, Malaysia. The basic understanding of the local community`s view is important before conducting further research because they are the key players of the industry. Apart from that this paper also covers an overall review and conceptualization of eco tourism within the community development perspective. Four variables, job opportunity, economic benefit, quality of life, preventing migration were measured using quantitative tool. Generally, the community is in full support of tourism business in their area and ready to explore more if given appropriate opportunity. It is also feared that the migration of the younger generation to urban areas can be worse and could be only prevented by boosting the job opportunities in Redang Island. The outcome will be significant to understand the host-tourism relationship that will stress the importance of co-management approach to encourage a sustainable tourism practice.

This paper presents the perception of local small-business community of Island Tourism in Penang, Malaysia. A study was conducted at Batu Ferringhi Beach, a popular destination in Penang, Malaysia for both local and foreign tourists wanting to experience the sun, sea, sand and water sports along the coast line of Batu Ferringhi. The Naturalistic Method of inquiry was used for qualitative data collection. This method is used to help the researchers understand the host-tourism relationship before conducting further investigation. There are some issues highlighted by the local business community that need to be addressed by the authorities. Investigation conducted at the Batu Ferringhi Beach, Penang revealed that the local business community received very little support from the local tourism development authorities. It is hoped that the findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature in the field of island tourism development that could contribute to the sustainability of the local small business community at the beach area.
