      • 외국어 문법 교육의 주요 쟁점 : 한국에서의 외국어로서 영어와 한국어를 중심으로 with Reference to English and Koraen as Foreign Languages in the Korean Context

박남식 연세대학교 한국어학당 2002 외국어로서의 한국어교육 Vol.27 No.-

Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language, 27, 49∼82. Our discussion here focuses on some major theoretical issues of practical relevance to the teaching of grammar, especially as it relates to English and Korean as non-native languages in the Korean context. Our assumption throughout the paper is that what we have learned from our experience with the teaching of English grammar in Korea can be positively transferred mutatis mutandis to the teaching of Korean grammar to non-native speakers of the language. We lead off with a look at the relevance of contrastive/error analyses and language acquisition research, followed by an examination of other issues posed by such dichotomies as: conceptualized vs. isolated grammar, descriptive vs. prescriptive grammar, inductive vs. deductive grammar, performance vs. competence grammar, spoken-vs. written-language grammar, low- vs. high-intelligibility grammar, and learner- vs. teacher-friendly grammar. Based on our discussion of these issues, we suggest that teachers of(English and Korean grammars as) non-native grammars adopt an eclectic approach, which not only incorporates results of contrastive/error analyses and language-acquisition research but also balances the two opposing sides of each of the dichotomic issues discussed. 언어기술에 있어서의 거리의 변수 : 영어를 중심으로 With Special Reference to English

박남식 한국외국어대학교 외국어 종합연구센터 언어연구소 1980 언어와 언어학 Vol.6 No.-

This paper addresses the question of distance as a linguistic variable. The main theme throughout the paper is that distance is a pervasive constraint on the form of language. Among other things, it is claimed that a principle of gravity, definable in terms of the relative distance between two of more related elements, can be invoked to explain why we have such phenomena as preferred interpretation, proximity concord, and availability of alternative case markings. It is also shown that distance, as between speaker and hearer, often determines the length of the expression used. The point is also made that, given the pervasive influence of distance on language, more attention should be paid to it in future linguistic research.

한국 대학 영어의 교과 설계 : With Specific Reference to Korea

        박남식 서울대학교 어학연구소 1979 語學硏究 Vol.15 No.1

As is suggested by its title, the present study aims at designing an EFL course for Korean colleges and universities. As such, it falls into five chapters, of which the first is of an introductory nature. The second chapter discusses some issues of theoretical relevance that need to be taken into account in designing any worthwhile foreignlanguage course. One of the points made here is that a good course must faithfully reflect the needs of the learner and of the community as well. The third chapter is a critique of the state of college English in Korea today. Among other things, it is claimed that the English course in current ‘vogue’ gives short shrift to the legitimate needs and interests of the learner. The fourth chapter proposes (a set of guiding principles for) an ideal course design for college English in Korea. One of the suggestions made here is that English be adopted as a partial reading medium for all content areas. The final chapter is a general commentary on the course design proposed in the preceding chapter. As such, it touches on some characteristics of the proposed course design and on some problems that we need to tackle if the design is to be implemented successfully.

한국인의 언어의식 : 언어접촉과 관련된 사회언어학적 연구

        조준학,박남식,장석진,이정민 서울대학교 어학연구소 1981 語學硏究 Vol.17 No.2

The present study is an attempt to provide a rough profile of lingustic consciousness, as reflected in the day-to-day use of present-day Korean. The underlying assumption throughout is that the drastic socio-political changes in post-Liberation Korea must have left strong imprints in the popular Korean psyche and that there must be linguistic reflexes for these imprints, The present study does indeed come up with an interesting assortment of linguistic changes attributable to such socio-political changes as ① the coming of democracy and the nuclear family and ② an ever increasing encounter with other dialects and languages. As such, the present study can serve as a basis for a systematic formulation of language policy or for a principled 'purification' of Korean. A 50-item questionnaiare is used for the present study. The 784 respondents range from middle-school students to college graduates and represent both sexes and most of the major dialects of Korean.

Teaching Korean to Speakers of Other Languages : A Quest of New Directions

        Park, Nahm-Sheik 서울대학교 어학연구소 1998 語學硏究 Vol.34 No.3

The present study is primarily an attempt to identify major problem areas in foreign-based undergraduate programs of Korean for speakers of other languages. It also aims to come up with a set of suggestions to help these undergraduate Korean-language programs abroad to steer clear of the problem areas thus identified. The present study draws on a questionnaire/interview survey as well as the experience of the researcher as a former theacher of Korean to speakers of other languages.

POTENTIAL COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS FOR KOREAN USERS OF ENGLISH

Park,Nahm-Sheik 한국외국어대학교 외국어 종합연구센타 언어연구소 1983 언어와 언어학 Vol.9 No.-

라는 뜻으로 한국인들이 흔히 "How do you like Korean Virgins?" 예를 들어 His father passed away라 하면 "그의 부친께서 세상을 뜨셨다"라는 뜻이 되고 "His old man kicked the bucket"라 하면 "그의 꼰대가 뒈졌다"라는 뜻이 되는 등 영어에도 존대법의 구분이 잘 되어 있다.

        Language Purism in Korea today

Park, Nahm Sheik 서울대학교 어학연구소 1989 語學硏究 Vol.25 No.3

This paper discusses various aspects of language purism as it is practiced in the Republic of Korea today. Among other things, it deals with the socio-political context of language purism in contemporary Korea, its major practitioners, its targets, its rhetoric, and its strategies. The paper also addresses the question of reverse purification, i.e. purification of foreign-language materials contaminated by Korean-language sources. It is suggested that this reverse purification can contribute to better international communication. It is also suggested that reverse purification can best be achieved through dramatic improvements in the quality of Korea's foreign-language education.

Issues and Trends in Korea's College-Level English-Language Teaching

        Park, Nahm-Sheik 서울대학교 어학연구소 1994 語學硏究 Vol.30 No.1

This paper addresses some of the major current issues in Korea's college-level English-language teaching. It does so by posing each of these issues in terms of an ideological conflict between conservatives and progressives. The paper reveals some of the major problems facing Korea's ELT practitioners, administrators, and policy makers, with particular reference to college-level ELT. In the process, it also throws light on the direction that must be taken by Korea's college-level ELT if it is to be more productive in the years ahead.
