Review : Trends in Recent Studies on Post-Harvest Technology

        ( Motoyasu Natsuga ) 한국농업기계학회 2015 바이오시스템공학 Vol.40 No.4

Purpose: This article summarizes the trends in recent research publications in relation to post-harvest technology for drying, storage, and quality, between 2005 and 2015. Methods: As of S eptember 7 , 201 5, a s earch query using two keywords, drying and agriculture, on the Web of Science (Registered trademark of Thomson Reuters) resulted in 3749 articles that were published between 2005 and 2015. However, the review was restricted to research articles published in the journals Transactions of the ASABE (American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers) and Biosystems Engineering: Journal of European Agricultural Engineering. Results: The total number of articles in the two journals related to drying, storage, and quality was 500, 319, and 885, respectively. The number of articles related to drying, storage, and quality was 250, 177, and 250, respectively, in Transactions of the ASABE. The number of articles related to drying, storage, and quality was 250, 142, and 283, respectively, in Biosystems Engineering. Conclusions: A shift in research focus from drying and storage to quality in Transactions of the ASABE might reflect a shift toward quality-conscious consumers. It seems that ASABE members are more focused on articles related to post-harvest technologies on quality than their European counterparts. Articles were cited based on their abstract content. Readers should read the full articles for more details.

Estimation of the Flavor of Green Soybean during Storage from Single Pod Measurements using Dedicated Near-Infrared Transmission Spectrometer

        Maebashi, Maki,Natsuga, Motoyasu,Egashira, Hiroaki,Ura, Nobuo,Katahira, Mitsuhiko Korean Society for Agricultural Machinery 2012 바이오시스템공학 Vol.37 No.6

Purpose: Green soybeans (edamame) are now an economically important and popular food product in Japan. In order to shorten breeding time and to decide an optimal harvest time, we have been developing a dedicated NIRT spectrometer since 2004 for the determination of constituent content such as sucrose and free amino acids, which are two major contributors to the eating quality, in a single pod green soybean. Methods: The obtained models showed that the developed NIRT instrument had reasonable accuracy for the determination of these two components. Then we carried out the investigation into the change in two components during a few days storage using these models with changing time, variety/cultivar, packaging and temperature. Results: The result showed that the most affecting factor on decreasing both sucrose content and free amino acids was variety/cultivar. The time, packaging and temperature also affected significantly in most cases.

In Situ Estimation of the Constituents of Green Soybean (Edamame) Pod using Near-Infrared Transmission Spectroscopy

        ( Michiru Suzuki ),( Mitsuhiko Katahira ),( Motoyasu Natsuga ) 한국농업기계학회 2014 바이오시스템공학 Vol.39 No.4

Purpose: We estimated the dietary qualities of green soybean (edamame) by using a specialized NIR transmission spectrometer to determine the constitutive properties of the soybean, such as the sucrose content and ninhydrine reaction quantity (NRQ; defined by the ninhydrine reaction, which has a high positive correlation with the total free amino acids), with the purpose of establishing a quality assurance system. Methods: We used a newly developed spectrometer probe that enables in situ estimation of the constituents of the soybean. Results: The calibration results obtained using a wavelength range of 760-960 nm were characterized by R2 = 0.57 and standard error of cross-validation (SECV) of 0.78% for sucrose, and R2 = 0.59 and SECV = 0.35% for NRQ. Conclusions: These results are inferior to those of our previous study obtained using a specialized bench-type transmission spectrometer. The poorer results are attributed to several possible reasons, including the effect of direct sunlight and the unstable sample presentation. We plan to conduct further study using improved optical layout and sample presentation.
