      • Continuity and Change about the Doctrine of Trinity in Seventh-day Adventist’s History

( Joseph Jannu ) 삼육대학교 선교와사회문제연구소 2023 Asia-Africa Journal of Mission and Ministry(AAMM) Vol.28 No.-

The aim of this study is to examine the process of change in the theology of the Trinity in the history of the Adventist Church. Most of the pioneers of the Adventist Church did not believe in the Trinitarianism. At that time, there were many Unitarian people in American Christianity who did not believe in the Trinity, and most of the Christian Connexion believers were Unitarians. Early leaders of the Adventist Church, such as Joseph Bates and James White, were from the Christian Connexion, so they did not accept the Trinitarianism. In addition, Uriah Smith, who led the theology of the early Adventist church, was a representative figure who emphasized Unitarianism. Due to this influence, until the 1880s, the Adventist Church emphasized Unitarianism instead of Trinitarianism. Anti-Trinitarianism was emphasized in the official beliefs of the Adventist Church, which was compiled in 1872. However, after the 1880s, through Ellen White's writings, the theology of the Trinity began to be emphasized within the Adventist Church. The fundamental beliefs of the Advent Church published in 1931 are evident in these theological changes. In 1931, contrary to a statement in 1872, the Adventist Church came to publish its fundamental beliefs that officially explained Trinitarianism. Through this historical process, we can see that the Trinitarianism of the Advent Church has undergone a process of change.
