From Homo Sapiens to Phono Sapiens: Smartphones as Intimate Strangers in the Age of Posthumanism

        ( Jie¸ Sue Hyun ) 동국대학교 영어권문화연구소 2019 영어권문화연구 Vol.12 No.2

Released in 2018, Intimate Strangers is a Korean remake of the Italian original, Perfect Strangers (2016), about smartphone dictated lives as the central plot. With the invention of new words such as digital zombies, smartphone addictions, nomophobia, and phubbing, we have evolved from “homo sapiens” to smartphone using “phono sapiens”. Even the director of Intimate Strangers admitted his smartphone as his best friend. The movie’s notable tagline: “We all have three lives: public life, private life and secret life” promotes a lot of questions, and this paper will attempt to understand how deeply smartphones have penetrated into our everyday lives: be it public, private or secret. As one of the character claims, “Nobody is perfect in this world, and we can easily get hurt. This smartphone has too much information and to play a game with such a perfect device is not a good idea. We could find out that we know less than we thought. Also, we don’t necessarily need to know so much about each other.” The movie’s unexpected twist in the end opens up even more questions on truth and trust as we approach smartphone dictated posthuman society.

“Heavenly Mingle”[d] Masculinity of Mark Antony in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra

Sue Hyun Jie 한국영미어문학회 2020 영미어문학 Vol.- No.139

Of all the Shakespearean characters, the portrayal of Mark Antony in Antony and Cleopatra seems to show a 21st century male sentimentality that embraces both virtus and amor . This paper argues that through Antony, Shakespeare depicts a masculine hero as well as a masculine lover that could be relatable even to this day and age. Antony shows what it means to be a man of heroic courage as well as a man of passionate love, a true manifestation of “Heavenly Mingle” that perhaps did not entirely make sense in his own time. Shakespeare’s illustration of Roman masculinity via Antony embraces both flexibility and mobility that is quite different from the rest of the Roman heroes, such as Julius Caesar, Brutus, Coriolanus and Octavius Caesar. In short, Antony and Cleopatra entertains the audience that one single play can include tragedy, romance, history, politics and even comedy which centuries of subsequent dramas provided, making this play, a very accessible and convincing work by Shakespeare.

Production and Prophylactic Efficacy Study of Human Papillomavirus-like Particle Expressing HPV16 L1 Capsid Protein

        Jie-YunPark,Sue-NiePark,Chul-JoongKim,HaryoungPoo,Hyun-MiPyo,Sun-WooYoon,Sun-YoungBaek 한국미생물학회 2002 The journal of microbiology Vol.40 No.4

To perform the prophylactic study of a vaccine derived from human papillomavirus (HPV) using Balb/c mice, we produced virus like particles consisting of HPV capsid protein L1 which has been reported to induce significant humoral and cellular immunity using various animal model systems. In order to produce HPV16 VLPs, the cDNA of L1 capsid protein in HPV type 16, obtained by polymerase chain reaction, was inserted into yeast expression vector, YEGa-HIR525 under the control of GAL10 promoter. The transformation of YEGa-HPV16 L1 was performed into the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y2805 by the lithium acetate method and the yeast clone expressing the highest level of L1 capsid protein of human papillomavirus type 16 was selected by Western blot analysis using anti-HPV16 L1 antibody. The purification of HPV16 VLP has been performed by the ultracentrifugation and gel-filtration methods. To validate the vaccine efficacy of the purified HPV16 VLPs and investigate the properties of HPV16 VLPs to induce humoral immunity, ELISA assay was performed. A significantly increased production of anti-HPV16 VLP antibodies was observed in sera from immunized mice. The neutralization activity of antibodies in the sera from the vaccinated mice was demonstrated by a rapid and simple assay to detect hemagglutihation inhibition activity.

In the Log Cabin with My Favorite Player: Appreciating Traditional American Masculinity Through Homoerotic Language in Baseball Fandom

        ( Hyerin Shin ),( Sue Hyun Jie ) 서울대학교 미국학연구소 2019 미국학 Vol.42 No.1

On the website r/NYYankees, a sub-forum (“subreddit”) of Reddit is devoted to the Major League Baseball team New York Yankees, with its predominantly male users showing their appreciation for baseball heroes by expressing erotic desires towards the players. When a player performs well, the subreddit is filled with admiration of desires to become the player’s intimate lover―explicitly expressed by “male” fans. This paper explains the phenomenon of young male fans’ desire for the now-lost model of traditional masculinity of domination and control, displayed in the context of baseball players’ dominant performances. The discrepancy between a fan’s non-homosexual real-world self and his homoerotic language on the subreddit is explained using the “performative fandom” theory, developed by Osborne and Coombs borrowing Butler’s notion of performativity. This paper suggests how this desire for traditional masculinity serves as recognition to the collapse of masculinity in the modern American society.

Ecliptic Revolution of the ‘Un-landed’ and ‘Landed’ in Shakespeare’s King Lear

        Hyerin Shin,Sue Hyun Jie 미래영어영문학회 2021 영어영문학 Vol.26 No.3

This paper attempts to clarify the significance of land in King Lear, especially the process of being "landed" and "unlanded". We propose that the ownership of land imbues the characters of King Lear with authority over others. Lear and Gloucester become "unlanded" when their land ownership is transferred to their children, resulting in the loss of their authority. Whereas Goneril, Regan, and Edmund become "landed" as they acquire the kingdom"s lands, which subsequently makes them possible to establish themselves as the rulers of Britain, determined to viciously defend their newly acquired lands against all who originally possessed land. We will present a detailed analysis on the transformation of the "un-landed" Goneril, Regan and Edmund into "landed" powers and all that comes from land. Although Edmund’s rise from bastardy to legitimacy can be classified differently to that of Goneril and Regan, their shocking ‘revolution’ overlaps, which in the end leaves us with an indelible mark of King Lear’s tragic end.
