<P>To unveil the organotypic role and vulnerability of lymphatic vessels, we generated a lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor-1 (LYVE-1)-Cre/iDTR double-transgenic mouse and ablated LYVE-1–expressing lymphatic vessels in adult mice in a diphtheria toxin (DT)–inducible manner based on selective expression of LYVE-1 in most lymphatic vessels. Strikingly, lymphatic vessels in the small intestine and lymph nodes were rapidly ablated, but lymphatic vessels in the other organs were relatively intact at 24 hours after DT administration. Unexpectedly, LYVE-1-Cre/iDTR mice died of sepsis without visible edema at 24 and 60 hours after DT administration. The cause of death appeared to be related to acute failure of immune surveillance systems in the small intestine and draining lymph nodes. Of note, acute loss of lymphatic lacteals in intestinal villi appeared to trigger distortion of blood capillaries and the whole architecture of the villi, whereas acute loss of lymphatic vessels in lymph nodes caused dysfunction of lymph drainage and abnormal distribution of dendritic cells and macrophages. Thus, intact lymphatic vessels are required for structural and functional maintenance of surrounding tissues in an organotypic manner, at least in the intestine and lymph nodes.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Thyroid gland vasculature has a distinguishable characteristic of endothelial fenestrae, a critical component for proper molecular transport. However, the signaling pathway that critically governs the maintenance of thyroid vascular integrity, including endothelial fenestrae, is poorly understood. Here, we found profound and distinct expression of follicular epithelial VEGF‐A and vascular VEGFR2 that were precisely regulated by circulating thyrotropin, while there were no meaningful expression of angiopoietin–Tie2 system in the thyroid gland. Our genetic depletion experiments revealed that VEGFR2, but not VEGFR3, is indispensable for maintenance of thyroid vascular integrity. Notably, blockade of VEGF‐A or VEGFR2 not only abrogated vascular remodeling but also inhibited follicular hypertrophy, which led to the reduction of thyroid weights during goitrogenesis. Importantly, VEGFR2 blockade alone was sufficient to cause a reduction of endothelial fenestrae with decreases in thyrotropin‐responsive genes in goitrogen‐fed thyroids. Collectively, these findings establish follicular VEGF‐A–vascular VEGFR2 axis as a main regulator for thyrotropin‐dependent thyroid angiofollicular remodeling and goitrogenesis.</P>
External Quantum Efficiency Above 20% in Deep Blue Phosphorescent Organic Light‐Emitting Diodes

<P><B>Highly efficient deep blue phosphorescent organic light‐emitting diodes</B> (PHOLEDs) with external quantum efficiency above 20% are developed using a bipolar‐type high‐triplet‐energy host material and a high‐triplet‐energy exciton blocking material. Maximum quantum efficiency of 25.1% and low roll‐off (still 23.1% at 1000 cd m<SUP>−2</SUP>) are achieved in these deep blue PHOLEDs. </P>

Total laryngectomy remains as an important treatment option in selected patients with laryngopharyngeal cancers, which inevitably sacrifices naturally produced voice. Much effort has been devoted to voice restoration for these laryngectomized patients. Several ways of voice rehabilitation after total laryngectomy have been developed and utilized thus far, including tracheoesophageal shunt speech, esophageal speech, pneumatic speech aid, and electrolarynx. Of these, tracheoesophageal shunt speech appears to be the most effective voice restoration method, while other trials might also be useful in special situations. Nevertheless, each method has its own unique mechanisms of voice production, thus has its advantages and drawbacks in clinical setting. In this review, we discuss the currently available management options for the rehabilitation of laryngectomized voice.

Background/Objectives: Extra-nodal extension (ENE) is one of the strongest prognosticators in oral cancers. Here we tried to evaluate clinicopathological factors associated with the presence of ENE. Materials & Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical information of 120 patients who diagnosed with oral cancer and received curative surgery at our hospital from Mar 2012 to Apr 2020. We comparatively analyzed clinicopathological factors associated with the presence of lymph node (LN) metastasis and ENE, respectively. Results: Variable factors of primary tumor characteristics such as lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, largest diameter of tumor, depth of invasion and maximum standardized uptake value were significantly associated with the presence of cervical LN metastasis. The largest diameter of tumor was statistically significant also in multivariate analysis for predicting the LN metastasis. Meanwhile, the association between primary tumor characteristics and the presence of ENE were not statistically significant except the primary tumor size. Importantly, factors associated with LN characteristics including the maximum diameter and number of metastatic LNs were significantly associated with ENE. Conclusion: In this study, several factors affecting cervical LN metastasis and ENE in oral cancer patients were identified. The ENE seems to be influenced by the status of the metastatic LNs, such as the number of metastatic LNs, rather than the characteristics of the primary tumor itself.

최근 전 세계적으로 전자여권을 도입하기 위한 연구가 미국을 중심으로 활발히 진행되고 있다. 또한 전자여권은 비접촉식 스마트카드 기능의 IC(Integrated Circuit) 칩에 사용자의 정보와 바이오정보 그리고 여러 보안 기능들을 포함함으로써 기존의 여권에서 발생하는 문제점들을 해결하고 있다. 그러나 기존의 RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) 기술에서 발생하는 데이터 위변조, 도청, 무단 복제 및 바이오정보 노출 등의 문제점들을 아직 내재하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 현재 필수로 적용되는 BAC 메커니즘을 조금 더 안정적이고 효율적으로 개선한 EBAC 메커니즘을 제안한다.
