Sialolithiasis is the formation of calcareous concretions within ductal system of a major or minor salivary gland. They are formed by deposition of calcium salts around a central nidus which may consist of desquamated epithelial cells, bacteria, foreign bodies, or products of bacterial decomposition. An ll-year-old boy complained of pain during meals and intermittent mild swelling in the right submandibular region. Although it was not detected in true occlusal radiograph. panoramic radiograph showed a round radiopaque mass 3mm in diameter. Computed tomography (CT) was taken for locating the stone and 3-dimensional reconstruction was per-formed . Under general anesthesia, sialoadenectomy was done through extraoral approach. diagnosis of submandibular sialolithiasis using high-resolution CT with reconstructions was helpful for surgical decisions, namely radical removal of the submandibular gland and its duct.
Bex1 Participates in Muscle Regeneration by Regulating Myogenic Satellite Cell Differentiation
Jae Hyung Koo 한국실험동물학회 2010 Laboratory Animal Research Vol.26 No.2
Bex1 protein is upregulated in regenerating muscle and interacts with calmodulin, a Ca2+-binding protein involved in cell cycle regulation. Following cardiotoxin-induced injury the regenerating muscle of Bex1 knock-out mice exhibits prolonged cell proliferation and delayed cell differentiation compared to wildtype mice. To gain insight into this process, we compared the regenerating myogenic morphologies of Bex1 knock-out and wild-type mice at several time points. Bex1-positive cells were identified by double immunofluorescence staining. These studies demonstrated that a population of cells that are Bex1- positive after injury are c-Met/basal lamina-positive and Mac-1-negative indicating that they are derived from at least a subset of myogenic progenitor/satellite cells but not invading immune cells. In addition, in regenerating muscle, Bex1 co-localizes with calmodulin in the cytoplasm of the late myoblast or early myotube stage of myogenesis. These results suggest that Bex1 participates in muscle regeneration through the regulation of satellite cell proliferation and differentiation by its interaction with calmodulin. Current studies of Bex1 may provide a new molecular tool for the identification of activated satellite cell and open the way to new or improved therapeutic regimens against progressive muscular atrophy.
Analysis of the Economic and Environmental Effects of Renewable Portfolio Standards with DECADES
Rbo Jae-Hyung,Chung Koo-Hyung,Kim Balho H. The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2005 KIEE International Transactions on Power Engineeri Vol.a5 No.1
This paper analyzes the environmental impact and economic effect of introducing the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) into the Korean electricity market using the DECADES (Database and Methodologies for Comparative Assessment of Different Energy Sources for Electricity Generation) model, a comparative assessment tool developed by IAEA. A bottom up approach is adopted for the evaluation of air pollutant emission and its impact of several RPS scenarios. The environmental damage costs of RPS scenarios are evaluated based on the Extern-E results and the Thailand externality study carried out by EGAT. The results of this study can be applied in determining or analyzing the national electricity policy and energy policy.
