      • Cohabitation and its Missiological Implications for Seventh-day Adventists in Nigeria

( Harriet Ikhane ) 삼육대학교 선교와사회문제연구소 2021 Asia-Africa Journal of Mission and Ministry(AAMM) Vol.24 No.-

Human culture in the 21st century has been transformed by a revolution in sexual values. Promiscuity is regarded by many as a virtue to pursue, and young people who do not engage in premarital sex are perceived by their peers as imprudent and unexperienced. This has thus given birth to a culture of cohabitation, which is a growing trend in Nigeria and the world at large. This study investigates the debilitative nature of cohabitation with the view of accessing its missiological implications for Seventh-day Adventists in Nigeria. It further examines the factors contributing to cohabitation and explores some possible solutions to the challenge. Using the qualitative approach, the study shows that the increase of cohabitation in Nigeria may be due to reconfiguration of the family units as a result of increased urbanization and increased isolation of young people from their family networks. The study further reveals that on one hand, the young people hear parents and pastors proclaim the value of marriage, but on the other hand, they see a culture condoning cohabitation. As such, cohabitation portends danger not only for the marriage institution but also for Adventist mission in Nigeria. Therefore, this study calls all religious sects, especially the Seventh-day Adventist church, to rise to their responsibility of harnessing every effort to arrest this situation of cohabitation. Again, this study challenges the church to be intentional in engaging a more biblical and missiological approach in developing a clear biblical message regarding cohabitation. Furthermore, the church does not only need to identify cohabitation as a missionary frontier to be crossed, but also to devise practical strategies to help reduce, if not eliminate, such practice. This study closes by highlighting the missiological implications of cohabitation for Seventh-day Adventists in Nigeria.
