Interrogar el canon: El problema de la ensenanza universitaria de la literatura en Mexico

This paper analyzes the literary canon of authors and narrative works of Mexican Literature as it is taught currently in some of the public and private universities of Mexico. An overview of the teaching of literature in today`s Mexico is followed by the scrutiny of the B.A. syllabi of Twentieth Century Mexican Literature courses from different universities in the country in order both to indicate the presence and absence of literary works and authors, and to examine in the canon the representation of gender, ethnic, literary genre and linguistic diversity. Our aim is to develop and characterize a census of the literary canon in Mexican universities so as to question and debate its significance and relevance.

La figura ausente o el enigma del yo: los personajes en Los detectives salvajes de Roberto Bolaño

Este trabajo analiza la caracterización del personaje literario en la novela Los detectives salvajes de Roberto Bolaño desde la perspectiva de la semiología narrativa de Philippe Hamon. Se señala la singularidad de tal construcción caracterológica argumentando que los personajes bolañianos carecen de interioridad, identidad y profundidad psicológica; que definen su existencia por su “hacer”, su acción en el mundo; que las acciones más frecuentes, determinantes y más fácilmente homologables en la novela están determinadas por un eje esencial: la búsqueda de la pertenencia a un territorio, real o metafórico. Tal búsqueda fracasa siempre y, entonces, frente a una realidad que se presenta inaccesible, los personajes asumen el rol temático del exiliado y del marginado. Bolaño evita todo discurso de las emociones y niega toda información sobre sus personajes. Sin embargo, les imprime una fuerza y una versomilitud notables al utilizar un medio no psicológico de caracterización que Milan Kundera ha llamado la aprehensión de la problemática existencial de los personajes.

D. H. Lawrence, Roberto Bolaño y el problema de la invención de México

Despite the ample research on the Chilean author, Roberto Bolaño, little has been done to trace his literary influences, most importantly in the specific ways he represented Mexico in his work. This study asserts that the Chilean author coincides surprisingly with D.H. Lawrence in the literary representation of Mexico. To illustrate such assertion, first a brief biographical introduction is presented to understand the deep and complex relationship both authors had with Mexico as a place of exile, desire and expectation. Secondly, a comparative analysis based on Bajtin´s concept of chronotope, and Edward Said´s criticism of orientalism, myth and the ideological representation of the non-European cultures examines the depiction of the Mexican landscape, and the Indian and Mestizo characters in Lawrence´s Mornings in Mexico and The Plumed Serpent, and in Bolaño´s The Savage Detectives and 2666.

A pesar de la amplia investigación ya existente sobre el autor chileno, Roberto Bolaño, poco se ha hecho para examinar sus influencias literarias, principalmente aquellas vinculadas con su muy particular manera de representar México en su obra. Este trabajo afirma que el autor chileno coincide de manera sorprendente con D.H. Lawrence al momento de representar México de manera literaria. Con el objetivo de ilustrar esta aseveración, el presente estudio elabora primeramente una breve introducción biográfica para entender la profunda y compleja relación que ambos autores desarrollaron con México como espacio de exilio, deseo y posibilidad. En segundo lugar, se presenta un análisis comparativo del paisaje mexicano y del personaje indígena y mestizo en las obras La serpiente emplumada y Mañanas en México, de D.H. Lawrence, y Los detectives salvajes y 2666, de Roberto Bolaño, basado en el concepto bajtiano de cronotopo. Para estudiar las consecuencias éticas de la representación literaria de México, este trabajo acude al intelectual palestino, Edward Said, y a su crítica del orientalismo, del mito y de la representación ideológica de las culturas no europeas.
