        Transitions of (The) Flower Drum Song: From Chin Yang Lee to David Henry Hwang

        The Flower Drum Song, written by Chin Yang Lee, and its homonymous musical adaptation by David Henry Hwang, are two seminal American works exploring Chinese American life. However, the musical has undergone significant transformations in various aspects. Therefore, this study aims to examine the transitions of (The) Flower Drum Song in settings, character portrayals, as well as the presentation and preservation of Chinese culture. The findings reveal that David Henry Hwang demonstrates a more proactive and independent motivation in portraying Chinese Americans compared to Chin Yang Lee; However, he falls short in effectively presenting and preserving Chinese culture as skillfully accomplished by Chin Yang Lee. David Henry Hwang's Flower Drum Song presents a more accurate portrayal of characters, while Chin Yang Lee's novel better preserves traditional Chinese culture. Generally, the transitions of settings, character portrayals, and plotlines are progress in Hwang’s musical, while the transition of Chinese cultural portrayal presents some retrogress, compared with that in Lee’s novel.

        miR-215 Enhances HCV Replication by Targeting TRIM22 and Inactivating NF-κB Signaling

        Purpose: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of liver disease. Several miRNAs have been found to be associatedwith HCV infection. This study aimed to investigate the functional roles and possible molecular mechanisms of miR-215 in HCVreplication. Materials and Methods: The expression levels of miR-215 and TRIM22 were detected by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR)and western blot analysis in Con1b subgenomic genotype 1b HCV replicon cells (Con1b cells) and JFH1 full genome infectingHuh7.5.1 cells (Huh7.5.1 cells). HCV RNA levels were measured by qRT-PCR. The protein levels of NS3, NS5A, p65 subunit of NF-κB (p65), and phosphorylated p65 (p-p65) were determined by western blot analysis. The relationship between miR-215 andTRIM22 were explored by target prediction and luciferase reporter analysis. Results: miR-215 overexpression enhanced HCV replication in Con1b cells, while miR-215 knockdown suppressed HCV replicationin Huh7.5.1 cells. TRIM22 was confirmed to be a direct target of miR-215. TRIM22 upregulation resulted in a decline in HCVreplication, while TRIM22 inhibition led to enhancement of HCV replication. Additionally, exogenous expression of TRIM22 reversedthe facilitating effect of miR-215 on HCV replication, while TRIM22 downregulation counteracted the inhibitory effect ofmiR-215 knockdown on HCV replication. Furthermore, miR-215 targeted TRIM22 to block the NF-κB pathway, and exerted apositively regulatory role on HCV replication. Conclusion: miR-215 facilitated HCV replication via inactivation of the NF-κB pathway by inhibiting TRIM22, providing a novelpotential target for HCV infection.

        Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Psychological Effects of Primary Nocturnal Enuresis in Chinese Young Adults

        Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, risk factors, and effects of primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) on physical and mental health in young adults in mainland China. Methods: An anonymous questionnaire was used to collect information including the sociodemographic characteristics, history of PNE, family history, daytime voiding symptoms, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores, Self-Esteem Scale (SES), and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). A total of 22,500 university students from 23 provinces and 368 cities in mainland China were included. Results: In total, 21,082 questionnaires were collected, and 20,345 of them qualified for statistical analysis. The PNE prevalence was 1.17%, and the distribution of monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE) and nonmonosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (NMNE) was 66.1% and 33.9%, respectively. In total, 28% of respondents with PNE reported bedwetting daily, 31.6% between 1 and 7 times weekly, and 40.4% between 1 and 4 times monthly; 80% of PNE cases had no history of treatment. The prevalence of PNE in patients with a family history, frequency, urgency, urinary incontinence, and recurrent urinary tract infections was significantly higher than in those without these conditions (P<0.001). PNE was significantly correlated with the PSQI total score (sleep quality) (P=0.011). The SES score was lower and the SDS was higher (P<0.001) in the PNE group than in those without PNE. Conclusions: In mainland China, the PNE prevalence among young adults was found to be high, and PNE had significant effects on physical and mental health. Risk factors included a family history, daytime voiding symptoms, and lack of treatment.

      • Photocatalytic function of the B<sub>12</sub> complex with the cyclometalated iridium(iii) complex as a photosensitizer under visible light irradiation

        <P>A visible light induced three-component catalytic system with the cobalamin derivative (B12) as a catalyst, the cyclometalated iridium(iii) complex (Irdfppy, Irppy, Irpbt and [Ir{dF(CF3)ppy}2(dtbpy)]PF6) as a photosensitizer and triethanolamine as an electron source under N2 was developed. This catalytic system showed a much higher catalytic efficiency than the previous catalytic system using [Ru(ii)(bpy)3]Cl2 as the photosensitizer for the dechlorination reaction of 1,1-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2,2-trichloroethane (DDT). Noteworthy is the fact that the remarkable high turnover number (over ten thousand) based on B12, which ranks at the top among the reported studies, was obtained when Irdfppy was used as a photosensitizer. This photocatalytic system was also successfully applied to the B12 enzyme-mimic reaction, <I>i.e.</I>, the 1,2-migration of the phenyl group of 2-bromomethyl-2-phenylmalonate. The plausible reaction mechanism was proposed, which involved two quenching pathways, an oxidative quenching pathway and a reductive quenching pathway, to be responsible for the initial electron transfer of the excited-state photosensitizers during the DDT dechlorination reaction. Transient photoluminescence experiments revealed that the oxidative quenching of the photosensitizer dominated over the reductive quenching pathway.</P>

        Development of Nested PCR, Multiplex PCR, and Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Assays for Rapid Detection of Cylindrocladium scoparium on Eucalyptus

        Eucalyptus dieback disease, caused by Cylindrocladiumscoparium, has occurred in last few years in largeEucalyptus planting areas in China and other countries. Rapid, simple, and reliable diagnostic techniquesare desired for the early detection of Eucalyptus diebackof C. scoparium prior to formulation of efficientcontrol plan. For this purpose, three PCR-based methodsof nested PCR, multiplex PCR, loop-mediatedisothermal amplification (LAMP) were developed fordetection of C. scoparium based on factor 1-alpha (tef1)and beta-tubulin gene in this study. All of the threemethods showed highly specific to C. scoparium. Thesensitivities of the nested PCR and LAMP were muchhigher than the multiplex PCR. The sensitivity of multiplexPCR was also higher than regular PCR. C. scopariumcould be detected within 60 min from infectedEucalyptus plants by LAMP, while at least 2 h wasneeded by the rest two methods. Using different Eucalyptustissues as samples for C. scoparium detection,all of the three PCR-based methods showed muchbetter detection results than regular PCR. Base on theresults from this study, we concluded that any of thethree PCR-based methods could be used as diagnostictechnology for the development of efficient strategiesof Eucalyptus dieback disease control. Particularly,LAMP was the most practical method in field applicationbecause of its one-step and rapid reaction, simpleoperation, single-tube utilization, and simple visualizationof amplification products.

        A Flexible Network Access Scheme for M2M Communications in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

        In this paper, we deal with the problem of M2M gateways` network selection for different types of M2M traffic in heterogeneous wireless networks. Based on the difference in traffic`s quality of service (QoS) requirements, the M2M traffic produced by various applications is mainly classified as two categories: flexible traffic and rigid traffic. Then, game theory is adopted to solve the problem of network-channel selection with the coexistence of flexible and rigid traffic, named as flexible network access (FNA). We prove the formulated discrete game is a potential game. The existence and feasibility of the Nash equilibrium (NE) of the proposed game are also analyzed. Then, an iterative algorithm based on optimal reaction criterion and a distributed algorithm with limited feedback based on learning automata are presented to obtain the NE of the proposed game. In simulations, the proposed iterative algorithm can achieve a near optimal sum utility of whole network with low complexity compared to the exhaustive search. In addition, the simulation results show that our proposed algorithms outperform existing methods in terms of sum utility and load balance.

        Genotoxicity and effect on early stage proliferation of osteoprogenitor cells on amino-group functionalized titanium implant surface: an in vitro test

        Genotoxicity and effect on early stage proliferation of osteoprogenitor cells of titanium surfaces modified by heptylamine functionalization through Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) were evaluated in current study. Mouse embryo osteoprogenitor MC3T3-E1 cells were grown on titanium surfaces of all the groups. The CCK-8 assay showed the growths of MC3T3-E1 cells on treated titanium disks were not inhibited compared with those on pure titanium groups. Result of Single Cell Gel Electrophoresis (SCGE) test indicated the treated groups showed no significant differences in tail length, tail DNA%, and tail moment compared with pure titanium group. Rate of micronucleus, nucleoplamic buds and nuclear blebs showed no significant differences between treated groups and pure titanium group. Our research exhibited that: The amino-group functionalized titanium surface has neither genotoxicity nor detrimental effects on early-stage proliferation towards osteoprogenitor cells in vitro, thus offer a theoretic support for the clinical use of such functionalized titanium as implant surface.
