Multifunctionality in Ceramic/Metal Nanocomposites
Sekino, Tohru,Kondo, Hiroki,Niihara, Koichi The Korean Powder Metallurgy Institute 2001 한국분말재료학회지 (KPMI) Vol.8 No.3
Several fabrication processes, corresponding nanostructural features and multifunctionality as well has been investigated for oxide ceramic based nanocomposites with metal nanodispersion (i.e., ceramic/metal nanocomposites). Transition metal (Ni, Co, etc) dispersed alumina and zirconia based nanocomposites have been synthesized by reducing and hot-press sintering of ceramic and metal oxide mixtures prepared by several method. Improved fracture strength (1.1 and 1.9 GPa for $Al_2O_3/Ni$ and $ZrO_2/Ni$ nanocomposites, respectively) of these composites have been achieved according to their nanostructures. In addition, ferromagnetic characteristic has been kept. The variation of magnetization with an applied stress has found to be more sensitive as smaller as the magnetic metal dispersion is. This result thus suggests the possibility of fracture and/or stress sensing of the composites by simple magnetic measurement.
Fabrication of Nanocomposite Powders by Sonochemical Method
Hayashi, Yamato,Sekino, Tohru,Niihara, Koichi The Korean Powder Metallurgy Institute 2001 한국분말재료학회지 (KPMI) Vol.8 No.3
Nano particles have recently been a major research interest, motivated by their unusual physical and chemical properties. Such particles can be synthesized using physical and chemical methods. The physical methods need expensive installation like vacuum induction furnace, whereas in chemical methods the process in generally very simple and low cost. In this study, simple and new fabrication process by using ultrasound was investigated to prepare the nano-sized metal particles on various powders at room temperature.
Boron Nitride Dispersed Nanocomposites with High Thermal Shock Resistance
Kusunose, T.,Sekino, T.,Choa, Y.H.,Nakayama, T.,Niihara, K. The Korean Powder Metallurgy Institute 2001 한국분말재료학회지 (KPMI) Vol.8 No.3
The microstructure and mechanical properties of $Si_3N_4/BN $nanocomposites synthesized by chemical processing were investigated. The nanocomposites containing 15 vol% hexagonal BN (h-BN) were fabricated by hot-pressing $\alpha-Si_3N_4$powders covered with turbostratic BN (t-BN). The t-BN coating on $\alpha-Si_3N_4$particles was prepared by heating $\alpha-Si_3N_4$ particles covered with a mixture of boric acid and urea in hydrogen gas. TEM observations of this nanocomposite revealed that nano-sized h-BN particles were homogeneously dispersed within $Si_3N_4$grains as well as at grain boundaries. The strength and thermal shock resistance were significantly improved in comparison with the $Si_3N_4/BN$ microcomposites.
Diagrammatic Representation of Environmental Monitoring Data
Yoshioka, Takahito,Sekino, Tatsuki The Korean Society of Limnology 2005 생태와 환경 Vol.38 No.S
The marked increase in the number of environmental problems, combined with the increase in their intensity and spatial extent, has resulted in an ever-increasing need for constant monitoring. This is complicated by the occurrence of new and complicated environmental issues that often prevent a thorough understanding of the entire monitoring framework. In the present study, a diagrammatic method was developed to present the entire framework of a monitoring plan. The diagram was separated into three sections- "Problem Section", "Research Process and Data Section" and "Entities Section" - to clearly present the disparate relationships between monitoring objectives and the monitoring procedure. Notation of the diagrams was undertaken using Unified Modeling Language (UML). A hypothetical monitoring plan for an environmental problem was designed to assess usefulness of the diagrammatic method. The diagram was capable of reviewing and revising the monitoring plan and could be used to select a monitoring procedure according to the monitoring objectives of the plan. The results suggested that this diagrammatic method was effective for designing an appropriate monitoring plan for a given monitoring objective.

Background/Aims The administration of liquid nutrients to patients is often accompanied by complications such as gastroesophageal reflux. To prevent gastroesophageal reflux, high-viscosity liquid meals are used widely, however, it still remains controversial whether high-viscosity liquid meals have any effect on the rate of gastric emptying. The present study was conducted with the aim of determining whether high-viscosity liquid meals had any effect on the rate of gastric emptying and mosapride might accelerate the rate of gastric emptying of high-viscosity liquid meals. Methods Six healthy male volunteers underwent 3 tests at intervals of > 1 week. After fasting for > 8 hours, each subject received one of three test meals (liquid meal only, high-viscosity liquid meal [liquid meal plus pectin] only, or high-viscosity liquid meal 30 minutes after intake of mosapride). A 13C-acetic acid breath test was performed, which monitored the rate of gastric emptying for 4 hours. Using the Oridion Research Software (β version), breath test parameters were calculated. The study parameters were examined for all the 3 test conditions and compared using the Freidman test. Results Gastric emptying was significantly delayed following intake of a high-viscosity liquid meal alone as compared with a liquid meal alone; however, intake of mosapride prior to a high-viscosity liquid meal was associated with a significantly accelerated rate of gastric emptying as compared with a high-viscosity liquid meal alone. Conclusions This study showed that high-viscosity liquid meals delayed gastric emptying: however, mosapride recovered the delayed rate of gastric emptying by high-viscosity liquid meals.
