        Post-obstruent Tensification in Korean

        Sechang Lee 한국음운론학회 1999 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.5 No.2

Lee, Sechang. 1999. Post-obstruent Tensification in Korean. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 5.2, 337-355. This paper aims to explore some phonological properties centered around the neutralization of syllable-final consonants and the tensification of the subsequent syllable-initial obstruents. I discuss how an optimality-theoretic conception of phonology overcomes some of the limitations of the traditional ways of treating the phenomena. I claim that the close correlation between weakening (i.e., neutralization) and strengthening (i.e., tensification) processes within the framework of Optimality Theory be better accounted for than in previous analyses. Vowel Change and Umlaut in Korean

Sechang Lee 한국음운론학회 1998 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.4 No.-

Lee, Sechang. 1998. Vowel Change and Umlaut in Korean. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 4, 189-206. The aim of this paper is to present a critical comparison of synchronic vs. diachronic analyses of the umlaut phenomenon in Korean, and argue for the latter. On the one hand, Kyungsang dialect of Korean is productive in umlaut. On the other hand, Kyungsang dialect provides consistent exceptions to umlaut: anterior coronals either allow or block umlaut in this dialect. The behavior of anterior coronals blocking umlaut is not expected by current synchronic phonological theories. I claim that the blocking effect of anterior coronals can receive a diachronic explanation by assuming that the historical changes involved in this dialect around the 19th century have obscured the umlaut which took place around the 17th century. On the regularity of the so-called /p/-irregular stems in Korean

        Sechang Lee 한국음운론학회 2000 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.6 No.2

Lee, Sechang. On the regularity of the so-called /p/-irregular sems in Korean. Studies in Phonetics. Phonology and Morphology 6.2, 395-414. The purpose of this paper is to show how an optimality-theoretic conception of phonology (Prince & Smolensky 1993, McCarthy & Prince 1995) overcomes some of the limitations of the traditional ways of treating the so-called '/p/-irregular stems' in Korean. Following Gorecka (1989), I adopt the Site-Articulator model. For the underlying representation of the /p/-irregular stem-final consonant, I posit /w/ which is identical with that of /u/. Therefore, it does not complicate the phonemic inventory of Korean. Investigation along these lines will lead exactly to the right predictions, which will contribute to making the grammar of Korean simpler. (Sookmyung Women's University)

Coda condition and licensing in place assimilation

        Sechang Lee 한국음운론학회 2001 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.7 No.2

Lee, Sechang. 2001. Coda condition and licensing in place assimilation. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 7.2. 353-373. This paper aims to propose a licensing constraint responsible for triggering assimilated or linked structure in phonology. It will be noted that while Lombardi (1999)'s proposal is adequate descriptively, but it has a problem in 'extending her analysis to place assimilation. The fact that the direction of place assimilation is typically regressive constitutes very strong evidence for the licensing approach to assimilation. As I will show in this paper, a translation of place assimilation analysis into the OT with licensing and alignment constraints allows a theoretically consistent explanation. I begin with the Korean paradigm and develop a theory of place assimilation in general. Then, I will show that the theory has the advantage of handling the variation among the place assimilation effects of other language, English. It will be shown that the interlinguistic variation among Korean and English lies in the re-ranking of a single constraint in the relevant constraint hierarchy. (Sookmyung Women's University)

      • Regular Exercise as a Secondary Practical Treatment for Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

        Sechang Oh(Sechang Oh),Goeun Han(Goeun Han),Bokun Kim(Bokun Kim),Junichi Shoda(Junichi Shoda ) 사피엔시아 2018 Exercise Medicine Vol.2 No.-

A novel notion has arisen in clinical medicine: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), representing a spectrum of conditions ranging from asymptomatic simple steatosis to steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. Even though there is a pressing need to treat this disease, the treatment options are limited. Previous studies have confirmed that weight loss via lifestyle management has proven to be successful. This is now accepted as the first-line therapy. In those studies, improvements of liver function and hepatic steatosis were noted when weight loss of around 3% to 10% of body weight was achieved. However, optimum weight loss and its management are difficult to accomplish. Subsequent studies showed that when weight loss was achieved independent of exercise, additional beneficial effects were observed in addition to weight loss. Exercise with a diet regimen brought even more benefits. Because of this substantial evidence, exercise should be proposed as another strategy for NAFLD treatment, regardless of weight loss. This review was aimed at providing a succinct, comprehensive overview of the diagnosis and management of NAFLD, highlighting the need for routinization of the role of exercise in NAFLD management, and at elucidating the mechanisms behind the benefits of exercise, with relevant studies.

The Relationship between Physical Activity and Quality of Life in International College Students

        ( Sechang Kwon ),( Jingu Kim ) 한국스포츠심리학회 2018 한국스포츠심리학회지 Vol.29 No.3

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between physical activity (PA) and quality of life (QoL) in international college students who have had insufficient exercise time due to diverse challenges from new living and academic environments. Methods: A total of 193 (86 male and 107 female) international students from colleges and universities in North Carolina, U.S. completed all the questionnaires (Godin Leisure-Time Exercise and Quality of Life) for this study. Pearson’s correlation and multiple regression analyses were used to measure the relationship between PA and QoL and the influence of PA on QoL. Results: The results indicated the positive relationship between the sum of PA levels (mild, moderate and strenuous exercises) and all the subscales of QoL (cognitive, emotional, functional, integrated, physical, social and spiritual), however, there were no correlations between mild exercise and physical, moderate exercise and social, and strenuous exercise and two subscales of QoL (emotional and spiritual). In addition, the findings demonstrated the significant effects of the all PA levels on QoL in a positive direction. Conclusion: This study suggests that an appropriate level (mild and moderate exercises) of participations in physical activity in leisure time is able to contribute to the enhancement of the positive relationship with overall quality of life, especially in the aspect of psychological health promotion among international students.

Syllable-final hardening in Harmonic Serialism: focusing on /p/-irregular stems in Korean

        Sechang Lee 한국언어학회 2020 언어 Vol.45 No.3

This article aims to provide a viable approach to the [p]~[w] alternation observed in the so-called /p/-irregular stems of Korean. It is noted that unlike the parallel Optimality Theory in the sense of Prince and Smolensky (1993/2004) which lacks the intermediate representations, Harmonic Serialism is capable of capturing some significant phonological interactions in question. Translated into the system to be proposed here, the /p/-irregular alternation is shown not to be irregular any more but it is entirely natural to see it as a hardening phenomenon with serial derivational steps. The question then arises as to how to resolve a ranking paradox of faithfulness constraints compared with the typical consonantal place of articulation. The patterns observed in the consonantal place of assimilation requires the faithfulness of dorsal constriction to dominate that of labial constriction, but the hardening at hand demands the opposite ranking. In order to resolve the paradox, it is suggested that Harmonic Serialism should be equipped with a feature theory unifying vowel and consonant place features in our current analysis. It will be shown that the /w/-hardening phenomenon is inherently derivational, and that all relevant cases can be dealt with more adequately in an Harmonic Serialism framework that has recourse to serial derivation within Optimality Theory.

A study of manner assimilation: focusing on word-initial [l]-avoidance, lateralization, and nasalization in Korean

        ( Sechang Lee ) 경희대학교 언어정보연구소 2018 언어연구 Vol.35 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to provide an explanation of manner assimilation as a whole in terms of the interaction of well-defined OT constraints. It turns out that previous OT treatments of lateralization in Korean assumes the crucial role of a language-specific constraint to the effect that a sequence of ln or nl is prohibited in the output. I attempt to get rid of the language-specificity by offering to replace the constraint in question with a licensing one requiring a doubly-linked structure of [lateral], LICENSE([lateral]). With the introduction of LICENSE([lateral]) on the constraint ranking, the otherwise puzzling phenomenon of word-initial [l]-avoidance can be nicely explained. Also, by combining this strategy with syllable contact law and output-output correspondence, it will be shown that we can account for the whole range of relevant data. Clearly, the best aspect of this analysis is that it does not add any new stipulation to the theory but makes use of independently motivated constraints of universal nature, not to mention alleviating some burden on grammar thereby.
