The present contribution addresses uncertainty quantification and uncertainty propagation in structural mechanics using stochastic analysis. Presently available procedures to describe uncertainties in load and resistance within a suitable mathematical framework are shortly addressed. Monte Carlo methods are proposed for studying the variability in the structural properties and for their propagation to the response. The general applicability and versatility of Monte Carlo Simulation is demonstrated in the context with computational models that have been developed for deterministic structural analysis. After discussing Direct Monte Carlo Simulation for the assessment of the response variability, some recently developed advanced Monte Carlo methods applied for reliability assessment are described, such as Importance Sampling for linear uncertain structures subjected to Gaussian loading, Line Sampling in linear dynamics and Subset simulation. The numerical example demonstrates the applicability of Line Sampling to general linear uncertain FE systems under Gaussian distributed excitation.

On procedures for reliability assessment of mechanical systems and structures

In this paper a brief overview of methods to assess the reliability of mechanical systems and structures is presented. A selection of computational procedures, stochastic structural dynamics, stochastic fatigue crack growth and reliability based optimization are discussed. It is shown that reliability based methods may form the basis for a rational decision making.

HOLISTIC ARCHITECTURAL BRANDING IN RETAIL IN A GLOCAL CONTEXT

For brands operating retail stores to stay competitive in the context of the rise of ecommerce, globalization and consumer’s quest for experiences, the design of store environments is one key element to deliver memorable, tangible brand experiences to customers. Architectural branding is an emerging literature stream at the intersection of consumer behavior, marketing management, and design (Raffelt, 2012), based on the assumption that a store concept should make effective use of materials and space to optimize the brand experience in a holistic manner (Quartier, 2017). However, factors such as globalization and increasingly international audiences challenge brands in conveying a consistent core brand identity across all touchpoints (?zsomer & Prussia, 2000). Thus, the question arises to what extent retailers should opt for “prototype designs”, which rigidly follow guidelines or to opt for a decentralized approach with potentially diverse brand image perceptions (Turley & Chebat, 2002). This paper gives first insights on how global retail brands can holistically configure their architectural branding in retail in order to reflect their brand identity in different target markets. From 23 in-depth expert interviews and 30 observations of five fashion and accessories brands across three geographic locations propositions emerged on how to achieve a compelling and target-group specific architectural branding in a glocal context. The studies have shown that to what extent a localization strategy is necessary depends on products/services sold, the brand positioning, the heritage of the brand and the local country culture of the subsidiary’s location. However, order not to overshadow and dilute the brand’s global core values, the extent of regional adaptation should be carefully considered.

U.S. Campaigns of Knowledge in the Philippines and Japan and Their Afterlives Today

미국이 일본을 점령하고 필리핀을 식민화하면서 사용해온 주요 생정치 기술은 인종적 성격이 매우 강한 교육 프로젝트를 통해 적절한 교육 내용을 만들어내는 작업이었다. 하지만 인종적 정체성을 부여하는 작업은 결코 간단하지 않았다. 그것은 헤게모니가 대개 그러하듯이 끊임없는 수정과 점검, 변호의 과정을 거쳐야 하는 일이었다. 이 글에서는 필리핀 공립학교의 영어교육과 일본의 문자개혁 같은 언어개혁에 반영된 인종담론의 정당화와 함께 인종 프로젝트로서 생겨난 일본의 브라이즈 학교를 살펴본다. 또한 강제성을 띠면서도 끊임없이 변화하는 인종담론이 일본과 필리핀에서 독특하게 나타나는 다양한 인종들의 혼합에서 비롯된 산물임을 밝히고자 한다. 미국은 필리핀을 식민화하고 일본을 점령하면서 매우 상이한 오리엔탈리즘적 인종관리 프로젝트를 추진했다. 이 글에서는 필리핀에 관한 1902년 상원 청문회와 〈일본에 대한 미국교육 선교 보고서〉, 브라이즈 학교의 교재를 분석하면서 다음 두 가지 사실을 보여주고자 한다. 먼저는 필리핀의 인종 고양과 일본의 탈문화를 보여주고, 다음으로 군국주의화에서 미국 내의 동화로 바뀐, 일본의 교육 지침에 나타난 인종화의 성격 전환을 보여준다. 이 글에서는 헤게모니적이면서도 상황에 따라 바뀌는 식민지의 주체적인 인종담론 수용 과정과 식민지 인종주의의 다원성, 오늘날 미 제국주의로까지 이어지는 지식 캠페인의 중요성을 부각시킨다. The creation of a suitable pedagogical subject through highly racialized educational projects has been a major biopolitical technology of U.S. colonization and occupation. Yet this racialization was never simply available but like all hegemony, had to be constantly renewed, affirmed, and defended. This talk examines the racialized justifications offered for language reform-the institution of English in public schools in the Philippines and script reform in Japan- and then Brides’ schools in Japan as racial projects and points to the regulatory, yet ever-shifting discourses of race as they emerge from the intersection of domestic racial categories, the specificities of conditions in the Philippines and Japan. Colonizing the Philippines and occupying Japan involved contrasting projects of Orientalist racial management. By analyzing the 1902 Senate Hearings on the Philippines, the Report of the United States Educational Mission to Japan and two Brides School manuals I demonstrate, first, the contrast between Filipino racial uplift and Japanese deculturation and then the shift in Japanese racialization as pedagogical imperative changed from re-education from militarization to assimilation within America. My talk emphasizes the hegemonic, yet contingent process of colonial racial subjectification, the pluralism of colonial racial formation, and the continued importance of campaigns of knowledge to U.S. imperialism today.
