Top Non-collinear Spin Valves with a Composite Free Layer for Hysteresis-free GMR Sensors

Top spin valves of Ta/[NiFe/CoFe]/Cu/CoFe/(FeMn, MnIr)/Ta composition with two types ofantiferromagnetic layers (Fe50Mn50 or Mn75Ir25) were prepared by DC magnetron sputtering. Thethree-step method for a free layer coercivity reduction has been used, namely, (i) deposition of acomposite free layer NiFe/CoFe, (ii) optimization of magnetic and nonmagnetic layer thicknesses and(iii) application of a “nearly parallel” anisotropy configuration. It is shown that the coercivity in spinvalves studied can be effectively reduced to a few tenths of an Oersted keeping the magnetoresistancehigher than 8%.
