Study on Vibration Perception by Visual Sensation Considering Probability of Seeing

Wind-induced vibrations of buildings can be perceived when movement of objects caused by the vibration is seen. However, movement of objects that would normally be expected to trigger visual perception of building vibrations is not necessarily seen in actual building environments. Therefore, to evaluate habitability to building vibrations, it is necessary to examine the influence of movement of objects on vibration perception taking into account probability of seeing the objects. As the first step in this study, those data necessary to estimate probability of vibration perception from seeing of swaying objects have been measured during normal activities in actual buildings. In addition, statistical analysis of the data has also been carried out. As the second step in this study, the probability distribution of vibration perception by visual sensation is estimated using the series of data measured in the first step. Probability of seeing object is considered in the estimated probability distribution.

The nutrient elements which are used in forest fertilization vary from country to country. The development of forest fertilization is influenced by different national interests and/or economic situtations. The fertilized area/year of each country is shown. As one can see, Korea will have one of the largest fertilized. forest area in the world. Nevertheless, attention needs to be paid from the technical viewpoint, since the development has been very rapid. The fertilization techniques, kinds of nutrient element, amounts of dosage, types of fertilizers, estimation of their efficiency, leaf analysis, ecological or physiological aspects of forest fertilization, tree species, wood qualities, forest vegetation, damages such as deseases, insects, frost, wind and snow, are discussed in relation to forest fertilization. Finally, the problem of eutrophication of water is discussed. The technical assessment will become necessary in introducing new techniques into the field.

Automatic detection of apnea and EEG arousals for sleep apnea syndrome

Sleep apnea/hypapnea syndrome (SAHS) is one of serious sleep disorders. EEG anousals due to the a pnea hypopnea are frequently appeared in polysamnographic(PSG) record in patients with SAHS. In this study, the method for detecting EEG arousals and apnea interval in PSG record was proposed for supporting visual inspection to classify respiratory levels and EEG arousals. Two threshold values were established for classifying the sleep aprea conditions and threshold values for detecting EEG arousals were then determined accordin to the results of apnea interval detection. Proposed automatic detection method will be an effective for diagnosis support system.
Effects of Body Pillow Use on Sleeping Posture and Sleep Architecture in Healthy Young Adults

Background and Objective Patients with position-dependent obstructive sleep apnea have a > 2-fold higher apnea-hypopnea index when sleeping in a supine position compared with a non-supine position. We investigated the effect of body pillow use on sleeping body position and sleep architecture in healthy young adults. Methods In experiment 1, we evaluated the body pressure distribution with or without body pillow use in 8 healthy young adults [age, 36.5 ± 13.0 years; body mass index (BMI); 20.6 ± 1.2 kg/m2]. In experiment 2, we performed a randomized-crossover intervention study to evaluate the effects of body pillow use on sleeping position and sleep architecture in 10 healthy young adults (age, 24.3 ± 7.8 years; BMI, 21.4 ± 1.7 kg/m2). Sleep architecture was characterized by polysomnography, and body positions were monitored using a sensor. Subjective sleep quality was evaluated with the Oguri-Shirakawa-Azumi sleep inventory, middle age and aged version. Results In experiment 1, body pillow use significantly reduced mean body pressure on the shoulder, hip, and whole body. In experiment 2, mean time spent in the supine, lateral, and prone body positions did not differ significantly between the 2 trials. Body pillow use, however, significantly extended the sustained time spent in the lateral body position compared with the control trial. Subjective sleep quality and sleep architecture did not differ significantly between the 2 trials, but body pillow use decreased the number of short (30 s) slow-wave sleep episodes. Conclusions Sleeping with a body pillow effectively extends sustained time in a lateral sleeping position and prevents segmentation of slow-wave sleep episodes.

In this study, the multivariate probability distribution was investigated to develop the expert knowledge-based automatic sleep stage determination technique. The ultimate purpose is to develop adaptive automatic sleep stage deter-mination algorithm for clinical practice. Gaussi and is tribution was adopted to realize automatic parameter selection while Cauchy distribution was a dopted to estimate the parameter distriution. The different usage of multivariate probability distribution of Gaussian and Cauchy distribution presented effectiveness for automatic sleep stage determination.
