Oxide dispersion strengthened tungsten heavy alloys have been used in a wide variety of industrial and military applications due to their high density, strength and stiffness. These alloys have been produced by mechanical alloying, which can provide uniform distribution of nano-oxide particles and an extremely fine grain structure, resulting in the reduction of the sintering temperature. However, the high-energy ball-milling process could introduce iron contamination from the vial and milling media during the procedure. In this study, the W-Ni-Y2O3 alloy was investigated as a function of milling time. The results show that the increase of the Fe/Ni ratio has a significant influence on the microstructural development and material properties. The XRD data reveal considerable solid solubility extension in these powders. The tungsten carbide and iron rich intermetallic compounds were formed after long milling times, which can change the relative density and hardness of the alloy. It is essential that we understand the role of intermetallic phases in the ODS tungsten heavy alloy which determine the material properties and the control of microstructural development.
Development of the Mandarin Phoneme Detection Score Sheet as a Screening Tool
Lin Chun-Yi,Hung Yu-Chen,Chang Hsiu-Wen 대한청각학회 2022 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.26 No.1
Background and Objectives: Hearing thresholds across frequencies must be obtained for hearing aid fitting. Narrow-band noise (NBN) and speech sounds are often used as stimuli in pediatric audiologic assessments to elicit children’s attention due to their wider frequency ranges as compared to pure tones. However, obtaining complete responses across frequency ranges is challenging in pediatric practice. Therefore, we developed a frequency-specific phoneme screening tool, the Mandarin Phoneme Detection Score Sheet, to help clinicians evaluate aided performance in pediatric practice.Subjects and Methods: A total of 30 adults with typical hearing and 30 children aged 3-12 years with hearing loss were recruited. Threshold ranges for the aided detection of Mandarin phonemes and NBN were measured using 95% confidence intervals. A stepwise regression analysis was then performed to identify the Mandarin phonemes that can predict NBN detection performance. Results: The Mandarin Phoneme Detection Score Sheet was developed based on the results of the regression analysis. It was shown that the phonemes /ɤ, a, tɕh/ could predict detection performance at different frequencies. Conclusions: The Mandarin Phoneme Detection Score Sheet can allow audiologists and early intervention professionals to determine the benefits of hearing aids for pediatric patients in the early stage of hearing loss conditions.
A Review of Electrically Tunable Focusing Liquid Crystal Lenses
Lin, Hung-Chun,Chen, Ming-Syuan,Lin, Yi-Hsin The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2011 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.12 No.6
Electrically tunable focusing liquid crystal (LC) lenses are reviewed in this paper. The distribution of the orientations of LC directors which is controlled by electric fields results in a distribution of refractive indices of LC directors. The incident light can be modulated by the electrically tunable lens-like phase difference of the LC lens. We introduce the basic operating principles of LC lenses and discuss the structures of LC lenses. The major challenges of LC lenses are also discussed. We believe this paper provides a guideline for basic understanding of LC lenses.
Cryptanalysis and Improvement on Lee-Chen’s One-Time Password Authentication Scheme
Chun-Li Lin,Ching-Po Hung 보안공학연구지원센터 2008 International Journal of Security and Its Applicat Vol.2 No.2
Yeh et al., in 2002, proposed a one-time password authentication scheme using smart cards. Subsequently, Tsuji et al. and Ku et al. respectively showed that Yeh et al.’s scheme is vulnerable to stolen-verifier attacks. Recently, Lee and Chen proposed an improvement of Yeh et al.’s scheme. Lee and Chen claimed that their improvement can effectively withstand the stolen-verifier attack and is as efficient as Yeh et al.’s scheme. This paper, however, will point out that Lee and Chen’s improvement is still vulnerable to a masquerade attack. And, a simple improvement is given to resist the masquerade attack.
An Exploration on the Use of Data Envelopment Analysis for Product Line Selection
Lin, Chun-Yu,Okudan, Gul E. Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers 2009 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.8 No.1
We define product line (or mix) selection problem as selecting a subset of potential product variants that can simultaneously minimize product proliferation and maintain market coverage. Selecting the most efficient product mix is a complex problem, which requires analyses of multiple criteria. This paper proposes a method based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) for product line selection. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a linear programming based technique commonly used for measuring the relative performance of a group of decision making units with multiple inputs and outputs. Although DEA has been proved to be an effective evaluation tool in many fields, it has not been applied to solve the product line selection problem. In this study, we construct a five-step method that systematically adopts DEA to solve a product line selection problem. We then apply the proposed method to an existing line of staplers to provide quantitative evidence for managers to generate desirable decisions to maximize the company profits while also fulfilling market demands.

The molecular mechanism to induce apoptosis in human hepatoma SMMC-7721 cells was investigated using 2',4'-Dihydroxy-6'-methoxy-3',5'-dimethylchalcone (DMC) isolated from the buds of Cleistocalyx operculatus. Typical morphological changes in apoptotic body formation after DMC treatment were observed using acridine orange (AO)/ethidium bromide (EB) staining. After 48 h of incubation with 0, 6.25, 12.5, and 25 μM of DMC, the percentages of annexin V-FITC-positive/PI negative cells were 1.51, 9.33, 33.84, and 61.32%, respectively. Apoptosis induced by DMC was blocked by z-VAD-fmk, a caspase inhibitor. Analysis of fluorescence intensities of rhodamine 123 in cells showed that DMC induced a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm). Western blot results showed that DMC decreased the Bcl-2/Bax ratio, suggesting that the Bcl-2 family is involved in control of apoptosis. All of these signal transduction pathways are involved in initiating apoptosis. DMC is a potential anticancer agent that deserves further exploration.

Our previous study revealed a novel role of Fas-associated death domain-containing protein (FADD) in islet development and insulin secretion. Insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) is a zinc metalloprotease that selectively degrades biologically important substrates associated with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The current study was designed to investigate the effect of FADD phosphorylation on IDE. We found that the mRNA and protein levels of IDE were significantly downregulated in FADD-D mouse livers compared with control mice. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that FADD regulates the expression of IDE at the transcriptional level without affecting the stability of the mRNA in HepG2 cells. Following treatment with cycloheximide, the IDE protein degradation rate was found to be increased in both FADD-D primary hepatocytes and FADD-knockdown HepG2 cells. Additionally, IDE expression levels were reduced in insulin-stimulated primary hepatocytes from FADD-D mice compared to those from control mice. Moreover, FADD phosphorylation promotes nuclear translocation of FoxO1, thus inhibiting the transcriptional activity of the IDE promoter. Together, these findings imply a novel role of FADD in the reduction of protein stability and expression levels of IDE.
