Hydrocyclones have been used for beneficiation of coal and mineral in coal washeries and mineral process industries. To enhance the efficiency of hydrocyclone, it is very essential to quantify the presence or absence of air core within the hydrocyclone. In the present study, for the first time, a new hydrocyclone design has been conceptualized and tested for its efficiency in separation of particles based on gravity. Experimental investigations have been carried out using design of experiments and the results have been analyzed statistically. The results have shown that suppressing the air core improves the separation efficiency of the hydrocyclone. Efforts have been made to explain the concept through fundamentals of fluid flow in hydrocyclone. The air core has a significant effect on particle separation as the relative density of the particles approach to the fluid density. The results will be used in the development of a new design of dense medium hydrocyclone at industrial scale that will improve the separation efficiency of the hydrocyclones by separating the near gravity particles more efficiently.

Systems generating uniform small bubbles are used in many mineral processing and chemical operations. We investigated the generation of smaller bubbles by using a two fluid jet system. Gas holdup results are reported in terms of the effect of superficial gas and liquid velocities in relation to the pressure in a bubble column with a water jet sparger. Experiments were conducted with hydrostatic head of 80 cm, 100 cm, and 120 cm in the bubble column. The gas velocity varied from 0.122 to 1.22 cm/s, and water flow rate from 33.3 to 333 cm3/s. Experiments were conducted at pressures of 2 atms., 3 atms. 4 atms. and 5 atms., and bubble sizes were measured by a digital camera (bubble compared to a reference wire inside the bubble column). Results show that the gas holdup increases with the pressure and superficial gas velocities; and at pressures of 2, 3, 4 and 5 atms., the gas holdup increases by 8.75%, 9.166%, 10%and 10%, respectively. The maximum gas holdup of 16.4% was observed at a liquid level of 80 cm and pressure of 4 atms. Optimum conditions for generating smaller bubbles with larger gas holdup are increased liquid flow rate, low liquid level, and high gas pressure. Experimental results also indicate that the column operates in both the homogeneous and heterogeneous regimes of gas-liquid flow.

Abstract

Carlinoside is a unique compound well-known for its excellent curative potential in hepatitis. There is a substantial research gap regarding the medicinal use of carlinoside, as its concentrations are greatly variable (depending on locality). We cultivated Cajanus cajan using vermicompost as a major organic amendment at two locations (Sonitpur and Birbhum) with different soil types, but identical climate conditions. Sonitpur soils were richer in soil organic C (SOC), enzyme activation, and N/P content than Birbhum. However, vermi-treatment improved many soil properties (bulk density, water retention, pH, N/P/K, and enzyme activity) to narrow the locational gap in soil quality by 15–28%. We also recorded a many-fold increment in SOC storage capacities in both locations, which was significantly correlated with carlinoside, total phenol, and flavonoid contents in Cajanus leaves. This significantly up-regulated the carlinoside induced expression of the bilirubin-solubilizing UGT1A1enzyme in HepG2 cell and rat liver. Leaf extracts of vermicompost-aided plants could cure hepatitis in affected rat livers and in the HepG2 cell line. Accordingly, vermi-treatment is an effective route for the growth of Cajanus as a cash crop for biomedical applications and can produce a concurrent improvement in soil quality.

Highlights

Soil organic C primarily induces carlinoside biosynthesis in Cajanus cajan.

Vermicompost elevates the medicinal value of Cajanus cajan against hepatitis.

Vermi-treated Cajanus yield carlinoside stably irrespective of growing location.

Vermi-treated leaf extracts expedited bilirubin solubilization in rat liver.

Quadrature based finite element methods for linear parabolic interface problems
Bhupen Deka,Ram Charan Deka 대한수학회 2014 대한수학회보 Vol.51 No.3
We study the effect of numerical quadrature in space on semidiscrete and fully discrete piecewise linear finite element methods for parabolic interface problems. Optimal L2(L2) and L2(H1) error esti- mates are shown to hold for semidiscrete problem under suitable regular- ity of the true solution in whole domain. Further, fully discrete scheme based on backward Euler method has also analyzed and optimal L2(L2) norm error estimate is established. The error estimates are obtained for fitted finite element discretization based on straight interface triangles.
Studies on solid mean residence time in a three-stage gas-solid fluidized bed with downcomer
Chitta Ranjan Mohanty,Charan Meikap 한국화학공학회 2011 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.28 No.3
Fluidized bed reactors behave as a continuously stirred tank reactor having wide residence time of solids, which is not desirable if a homogeneous product is required. The multi-stage fluidized bed reactors narrow the solids residence time, making it useful for various operations. A three-stage fluidized reactor was designed, fabricated and operated under stable operating condition to investigate the mean particle residence time in the system. The materials taken for the study were lime and sand. In the particle residence time experiments, the results revealed that at a particular solids velocity, mean residence time decreased with increase in gas velocity and increased with decrease in gas velocity. Based on the data, a correlation has been presented for predicting mean residence time.
Paresthesia diagnosed using cone-beam computed tomography: a case report

Various dental procedures, such as injection administration, surgical treatment, and endodontic treatment, can cause injury to the nerves. The most commonly injured nerves are the inferior alveolar and lingual nerves. This can manifest as altered sensation to the area of innervation of the injured nerve, such as the lower lip, chin, teeth, tongue, and mucosa. Altered sensations or loss of sensation are relatively infrequent complications in daily dental practice. Here, we report an uncommon case of altered sensation in the midfacial region caused by an endodontic procedure and discuss the need to consider local dental causes in the differential diagnosis of numbness in the facial region.
