The effects of temperature, water activity (aw), incubation time, and their combinations on radial growth and ochratoxin A (OTA) production of/by eight Aspergillus niger aggregate strains (six A. tubingensis and two A. niger) and four A. carbonarius isolated from Moroccan grapes were studied. Optimal conditions for the growth of most studied strains were shown to be at 25°C and 0.95 aw. No growth was observed at 10°C regardless of the water activity and isolates. The optimal temperature for OTA production was in the range of 25°C~30°C for A. carbonarius and 30°C~37°C for A. niger aggregate. The optimal aw for toxin production was 0.95~0.99 for A. carbonarius and 0.90~0.95 for A. niger aggregate. Mean OTA concentration produced by all the isolates of A. niger aggregate tested at all sampling times shows that maximum amount of OTA (0.24 µg/g) was produced at 37°C and 0.90 aw. However, for A. carbonarius, mean maximum amounts of OTA (0.22 µg/g) were observed at 25°C and 0.99 aw. Analysis of variance showed that the effects of all single factors (aw, isolate, temperature and incubation time) and their interactions on growth and OTA production were highly significant.

Purpose: There is limited research on the effects of neuropathic pain (NP) on quality of life, depression levels, and sleep quality in patients with combat-related extremity injuries. This study evaluated whether patients with combat-related extremity injuries with and without NP had differences in quality of life, sleep quality, and depression levels. Methods: A total of 98 patients with combat-related extremity injuries, 52 with NP and 46 without, were included in this cross-sectional study. The presence of NP was determined using the Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs questionnaire. The outcome measures were a visual analogue scale (VAS), the 36-Item Short Form Survey, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).Results: The VAS subparameter scores for pain (all P˂0.05), PSQI sleep duration subscale scores (P=0.025), PSQI sleep disturbance subscale scores (P=0.016), and PSQI total scores (P=0.020) were significantly higher in patients with NP than those without. Logistic regression analysis showed that VAS scores of 5 and above for average pain during the previous 4 weeks contributed independently to the prediction of NP.Conclusions: Patients with combat-related extremity injuries with NP had more pain and poorer sleep quality than those without NP. Sleep quality should be evaluated as part of the diagnostic work-up in patients with combat-related extremity injury with NP, and interventions to improve sleep quality may help manage NP in this patient group.

<P>A series of diverse polyfunctionalized triheterocyclic benzothiazoles were easily prepared in excellent yields via the Biginelli reaction of 2-aminobenzothiazole with substituted benzaldehydes and α-methylene ketones using FeF(3) as an expeditious catalyst under solvent-free conditions. The protocol provides a practical and straightforward approach toward highly functionalized triheterocyclic benzothiazole derivatives in excellent yields. The reaction was conveniently promoted by FeF(3) and the catalyst could be recovered easily after the reaction and reused without any loss of its catalytic activity. The advantageous features of this methodology are high atom economy, operational simplicity, shorter reaction time, convergence, and facile automation.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Two electrochromic copolymers, <B>P1</B> and <B>P2</B>, were synthesized from Stille coupling reactions of dibrominated phenazine having branched and linear alkyl side-chains, respectively, with distannyl thiophene. The prepared donor–acceptor type electrochromic polymers showed good solution processability, superior switching characteristics, and high redox stability. In electrochromic measurements, the polymers exhibited reversible blue-to-transmissive switching at an applied voltage of 0.9 V and 1.2 V, respectively, with transmittance changes of 18.1% at 597 nm and 25.3% at 653 nm for <B>P1</B> and <B>P2</B>, respectively. They showed high coloration efficiencies of 232.5 and 132.6 cm2/C, respectively, in the visible region and long-term stability for more than a hundred cycles. Furthermore, the polymers were completely transparent in the bleached state, accompanied by high NIR absorption, upon oxidation. These results manifest that the alkyl side-chains on the quinoxaline acceptor unit could dictate the intermolecular interactions of polymer chains affecting the electrochromic performances. The findings of this study suggest the strategy of designing and preparing efficient electrochromic polymers with selective absorption in long visible and NIR regions for smart windows and displays.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We prepare alkylated quinoxaline-thiophene based donor-acceptor type conjugated polymers. </LI> <LI> The prepared polymers exhibit reversible blue-to-transmissive switching at a low voltage of 1.2 V. </LI> <LI> The alkyl side-chains on the acceptor unit significantly influenced the electrochromic behaviors of the polymers. </LI> <LI> The polymer <B>P1</B> showed superior electrochromic performances and operating stability. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

In this study, a series of organometallic hybrid polymers were synthesized through the complexation of cobalt metal ions with bisterpyridine derivatives bearing substituted 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene. The prepared polymers exhibited specific color changes from orange to dark green based on the metal-to-ligand charge transfer transitions. Cyclic voltammograms of the polymers showed a reversible redox wave according to the redox reaction of the cobalt metal ions. In addition, the electrochromic devices containing the polymer film cast on an indium-tin-oxide electrode exhibited good electrochromic properties, with reversible and stable spectral transitions of the cobalt-bisterpyridine complexes.

Background: The authors aimed to compare the effects of a one-time ultrasound (US)-guided subacromial corticosteroid injection and three-time ozone (O2-O3) injection in patients with chronic supraspinatus tendinopathy. Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to the corticosteroid group (n = 22) or ozone group (n = 22). Injections in both groups were administered into subacromial bursa with an US-guided in-plane posterolateral approach. Primary outcome measure was the change in the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index (WORC) score between baseline and 12-weeks post-injection. Secondary outcome measures included visual analog scale and Shoulder Pain and Disability Index scores. Assessments were recorded at baseline, and 4-weeks and 12-weeks post-injection. Results: Forty participants completed this study. Based on repeated measurement analysis of variance, a significant effect of time was found for all outcome measures in both groups. Both the groups showed clinically significant improvements in shoulder pain, quality of life, and function. Baseline, 4-week post-injection, and 12-week post-injection WORC scores (mean ± standard deviation) were 57.91 ± 18.97, 39.10 ± 20.50 and 37.22 ± 27.31 in the corticosteroid group, respectively and 69.03 ± 15.89, 39.11 ± 24.36, and 32.26 ± 24.58 in the ozone group, respectively. However, no significant group × time interaction was identified regarding all outcome measures. Conclusions: Three-time ozone injection was not superior to a one-time corticosteroid injection in patients with chronic supraspinatus tendinopathy. It might be as effective as corticosteroid injection at 4-weeks and 12-weeks post-injection in terms of relieving pain and improving quality of life and function.
