Affective-discursive Practices in Southeast Asia: Appropriating emotive roles in the case of a Filipina domestic helper in Hong Kong who fell to her death while cleaning windows

Aguirre, Alwin C. Korea Institute for ASEAN Studies 2017 Suvannabhumi Vol.9 No.1

The paper demonstrates the potential contribution of integrating discursive and affective analytic regimes in framing the study of Southeast Asia. I examine the "emotional possibilities" available to migrants with particular focus on the experience of Filipino domestic helpers in Hong Kong thrown into relief in 2016 by news of maids falling to their deaths while cleaning windows of their employers' above-ground apartments. First, I situate the study in recent calls for Critical Discourse Studies and Migration Studies to transcend foundational methodologies in their respective fields in order to apprehend formerly disregarded aspects of the human condition, including affect and emotion. I then briefly present the debate in the affective turn in social analysis, which has to do with rethinking the attachment of affect and discourse. My own inquiry is premised on the assertion that emotion is multidimensional. I specifically explore the usefulness of taking emotion as "affective-discursive practice" by focusing on an analysis of the appropriation of the victim role by foreign domestic helper employer groups that could be seen in pertinent news reports of selected online Hong Kong newspapers. In the end, I also emphasize the necessity of reflexivity in projects that take affect as central object of inquiry.

Damping and frequency changes induced by increasing levels of inelastic seismic demand

Aguirre, Diego A.,Montejo, Luis A. Techno-Press 2014 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.14 No.3

The objective in this research is to determine the feasibility of using changes on the dynamic properties of a reinforced concrete (RC) structure to identify different levels of seismic induced damage. Damping ratio and natural frequency changes in a RC bridge column are analyzed using different signal processing techniques like Hilbert Transforms, Random Decrement and Wavelet Transforms. The data used in the analysis was recorded during a full-scale RC bridge column shake table test. The structure was subjected to ten earthquake excitations that induced different levels of inelastic demand on the column. In addition, low-intensity white noises were applied to the column in-between earthquakes. The results obtained show that the use of the damping ratio and natural frequency of vibration as damage indicators is arguable.

Implimentation of the European Monetary Union and Its Sustainability, 1999-2002 : Recommendations from a Dynamic Game

Aguirre, Maria Sophia 세종대학교 국제경제연구소 2000 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.15 No.1

This paper presents a dynamic theoretic model of monetary union break-downs that result from violations of the macroeconomic targets agreed upon at the time of monetary integration. Non-cooperative behavior of two constituencies or interest groups results in multiple possible equilibria. The paper analyzes the conditions of financing and the cost of maintaining the targets that will determine whether or not a monetary union member will be subject to foreign reserves depletion or, in the extreme, an exchange rate attack. In addition, it provides the decision rule for European countries to determine if they should continue to participate in the monetary union or withdraw from it. Therefore, it indirectly provides an intuition for the conditions required for the monetary union to succeed. (JEL Classifications: F31)

      • On the use of numerical models for validation of high frequency based damage detection methodologies

        Aguirre, Diego A.,Montejo, Luis A. Techno-Press 2015 Structural monitoring and maintenance Vol.2 No.4

This article identifies and addresses current limitations on the use of numerical models for validation and/or calibration of damage detection methodologies that are based on the analysis of the high frequency response of the structure to identify the occurrence of abrupt anomalies. Distributed-plasticity non-linear fiber-based models in combination with experimental data from a full-scale reinforced concrete column test are used to point out current modeling techniques limitations. It was found that the numerical model was capable of reproducing the global and local response of the structure at a wide range of inelastic demands, including the occurrences of rebar ruptures. However, when abrupt sudden damage occurs, like rebar fracture, a high frequency pulse is detected in the accelerations recorded in the structure that the numerical model is incapable of reproducing. Since the occurrence of such pulse is fundamental on the detection of damage, it is proposed to add this effect to the simulated response before it is used for validation purposes.

Oral findings and its association with prenatal and perinatal factors in newborns

        Perez-Aguirre, Brenda,Soto-Barreras, Uriel,Loyola-Rodriguez, Juan Pablo,Reyes-Macias, Juan Francisco,Santos-Diaz, Miguel Angel,Loyola-Leyva, Alejandra,Garcia-Cortes, Obed The Korean Pediatric Society 2018 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.61 No.9

Purpose: This study aimed to determine the frequency of abnormalities in the newborn oral cavity and to evaluate the association with prenatal and perinatal factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated 2,216 newborns. Oral findings were assessed in the first 24 hours of life using visual examination. Sex, weight, length, gestational age, and medical disorders at birth were recorded. Maternal demographic and medical information was also obtained. Results: The most common oral findings were Bohn's nodules, Epstein's pearls, and dental lamina cysts. Other intraoral findings included odontogenic cysts, ankyloglossia, and natal teeth, among others. In logistic regression analyses, folic acid consumption during pregnancy was significantly associated with Bohn's nodules (odds ratio [OR], 1.79; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.23-2.55; P=0.002), Epstein's pearls (OR, 1.63; 95% CI, 1.14-2.33; P=0.007), and dental lamina cysts (OR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.02-2.05; P=0.038). Moreover, preterm births were negatively associated with prevalence of Bohn's nodules (OR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.50-0.80; $P{\leq}0.0001$). Comparison between newborns with and without oral inclusion cysts showed that maternal folic acid and iron intake were significantly different (P<0.05). Conclusion: Maternal folic acid and iron intake were associated with the prevalence of oral inclusion cysts.

      • Slide Session : OS-HEM-09 ; Hematology : Prevalence and Mortality of Cardiac Involvement in Patients with Amyloidosis of an Institutional Registry Amyloidosis

( Maria Adela Aguirre ),( Maria Lourdes Posadas Martinez ),( Melisa Blomberg ),( Dorotea Beatriz Fantl ),( Diego Hernan Giunta ),( Fernan Gonzalez Bernaldo De Quiroz ),( Maria Florencia Grande Ratti ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: Cardiac involvement is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality of amy-loidosis, especially due to light-chain (AL) and transthyretin, both wild and hereditary types. Objectives: To estimate the prevalence and mortality of patients with evidence of cardiac involvement in patients diagnosed with amyloidosis. Methods: Ambispective cohort study, with data obtained from all patients included between 01/2007 and 03/2013 with evidence of amyloidosis in the Institutional Regis-try Amyloidosis of the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires. The diagnostic criteria of cardiac amyloidosis were predefined. Mortality from cardiac amyloidosis was measured using a combination of active and passive assessment. Survival time was evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier estimator. SPSS 19.0 was used. Results: The registry included 126 patients and the prevalence of cardiac amyloidosis was 40% (95%, CI:31-49%). Among the 40% (50/126) of patients with confirmed amyloidosis and suspected of cardiac involvement, the median age was 72 years (IQR 79-81) and 26% were women (13/50). Suspected diagnosis of cardiac involvement was: clinical 82.4% (42/50), from complementary studies 67% (34/50), and diagnosed from another hospital 6% (3/50). From all patients with suspected cardiac involvement, 47% had con- firmed biopsy. Overall mortality of patients with cardiac involvement was 20% (11/50), the median survival was 1782 days of follow up (CI 95% 1365-2199). Conclusions: The prevalence of cardiac involvement and mortality in patients with amyloidosis was high. Advances in diagnosis of the possible causes of amyloidosis in the future will allow the detection of patients with high risk of death from cardiac causes in our country.

RESEARCH ARTICLES : Mapping a New Source of Self-fertility in Perennial Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)

( Andrea Arias Aguirre ),( Bruno Studer ),( Javier Do Canto ),( Ursula Frei ),( Thomas Lubberstedt ) 한국육종학회 2013 Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Vol.1 No.4

There is a rising interest of moving towards hybrid breeding in out crossing species. Self-compatibility (SC), which occurs at low rates in self-incompatible species, could be used to develop inbred lines, a key requirement for hybrid breeding programs. In perennial ryegrass, the existence of SC independent from the self-incompatibility (SI) loci S and Z has been reported. In this study, we used 98 F2 individuals from a cross between a self-compatible ecotype and an individual of the VrnA mapping population that were tested with markers for two candidate linkage groups 3 and 5 as well as markers for candidate regions at the S and Z locus. We were able to determine a tentative location of a SC locus and tested the possible interaction to other loci involved in SI and SC. This information will help to fine map the SC locus, and for marker-assisted selection.
