Lateral migration of particles has drawn a lot of attention in suspension community for the last 50 years. In this paper, an experimental study on lateral migration of neutrally-buoyant spherical particles transported through a square microchannel is carried out using a fluorescent microscope at low Reynolds numbers. Fluorescent microspheres with diameter of d = 10 ㎛ are adopted as the test particles. Spatial distributions of the particles in dilute suspension are visualized at different Reynolds numbers. It is shown that particles are uniformly distributed over the channel cross-section at relatively low Reynolds numbers. As the Reynolds number increases, however, particles migrate inward from the wall and away from the central axis of the channel, so that consequently they accumulate at an equilibrium position. Experimental results obtained in this work offer design rules for microfluidic channels that play important roles of particle separation or particle.

Ependymomas are rare neuroepithelial tumors that arise from the ependymal cells of the cerebral ventricles, the central canal of the spinal cord and cortical rests. Some tumors may extend to the gray matter reaching the pial surface, but pure cortical ependymomas are uncommon. We report a case of ependymoma arising from extraventricular system, especially supratentorial falx. Sixty five-year-old woman presented memory impairment and apraxia was admitted to the our clinic. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain showed a 4.5×5.5 cm sized mass in the left occipital lobe, attached to the falx. The patient underwent the total tumor removal and the final pathology showed grade II cellular ependymoma. Because of the supratentorial and pure cortical ependymomas are rare, proper studies and pathologic confirm are needed to distinguish different tumors.

Flow control in a micro-channel is one of the most important issues in the field of microfluidics. Although many studies have suggested ideas to induce Couette-type flow in a microchannel by changing geometry, they have some difficulties of fabrication or analysis. In the present study, linear velocity profile (Couette flow) was induced by using electro-osmosis technique. This electroosmotic Couette flow could be simply realized by using different materials (glass and PDMS) as the microchannel wall. Velocity difference between two channel walls was induced due to the difference between zeta-potentials of respective materials. The velocity inside a microchannel was measured using a micro-PIV analysis. This new method can be used to analyze and control the movement of adhesive cells which have been known to react to shear stress.
