But in spite of the importance of this book, a convenient and efficient method to use the information in this book isn't developed yet and as a result the use of this book in a low state. Therefore before than anything else, there is necessity to establish the database on『Euibangyoochui』.

Vol.12 No.2

At the 9th reign of King Hyojong[1658], the State stipulated the establishment of drug markets at each province including Jeonnado, Gyeongsangdo and Gangwondo, which can be an official origin of ‘Drug Market'in the Joseon period. Drug markets were held Daegu, Wonju, Jeonju, Gongju, Jinju, Cheongju, Chungju, Daejeon, Gaeseong, and Jecheon, etc. and the drug market is also called ‘Yeongsi.”Amongst all, Jecheon drug market was an important spot of traffic and it was adjacent to a producing center of medicinal stuff, so it could grow into the center of dealings in medicinal stuff. The Jecheon drug market was not only in charge of distribution function of Oriental medicines but also in charge of the function of cultural history. First, due to the opening of the Jecheon drug market, the local people swarming from all over the country propagated their languages and cultures while exchanging medicines; thus, it can be judged that the spatial meaning of a drug market was in charge of cultural history function. Second, in the process of production, distribution, division and consumption of the medicinal stuff. there arose a variety of medicine culture heritages and up to the present, such cultural heritages have been well preserved. Third, the Jecheon drug market assumes time perpetuity of succeeding to the time-honoured tradition without interruption until now. Besides, the Jecheon drug market has healthcare, geographical, and folklore value, which proves that the Jecheon drug market played a role of a medical culture center for the central inland mountainous region. This research tried to set up the Jecheon drug market and its medical culture through the general relations with its neighboring drug markets centering on the Jecheon drug market. For this purpose, this research intended to take a look through its related documents, newspaper articles, and interviews with its related characters.

Vol.33 No.2

The three major medical compilations of the Joseon Dynasty, Hyangyak-jipseongbang, Uibang-yuchwi, and Dongui-bogam, directly cited a total of 376 kinds of medical books. Among them, 11 medical books were commonly referred: Gyeongheom-yangbang, Deukyobang, Saminbang, Seonmyeongnon, Seongje-chongnok, Seonghyebang, Eoui-chwaryo, Yeongnyu-geombang, Wisaeng-bogam, Cheongeumbang, and Tangaek-boncho. Most of them were medical classics and formularies representing the period from the Song to the early Ming Dynasties, which most likely influenced the establishment of Joseon's medical tradition throughout the Joseon Dynasty. The reason why the majority of the medical reference books was formularies seems to be that prescription practices and the use of medicinals value knowledge with accumulated experience over a long period, whereas medical ideas and doctrines change with time. Besides, except for Eoui-chwaryo compiled in the Goryeo Dynasty, the three significant compilations referred to Chinese medical books, which indicates that the compilers made efforts to accommodate the newly introduced foreign knowledge. At the same time, the former compilations, Hyangyak-jipseongbang and Uibang-yuchwi, later appeared as primary references in Dongui-bogam's Medical Formularies of Successive Generations. However, in order to avoid overlapping the same contents, the compilers tried to form a differentiated version by extracting only the unique contents.
