The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of back massage on the status of facial skin in middle-aged women, observe the effects of the program, and observe the differences in levels of moisture, oil, and elasticity before and after the six-week skin management program. From February 28th to April 9th, 2008, 12 women in their 40s and 50s residing in Busan, Korea were chosen. The levels of moisture, oil, and elasticity in their foreheads (middle) and cheeks (right) were measured using Triplesense TR-3, a skin measurment device, from Moritex. 6 women-Group A-were given 30 minutes of back massage and 1 hour of facial skin care for a total of 1.5 hours of care. The other 6 women-Group B-were given 1 hour of facial skin care. The program was held once a week for six weeks, and all subjects skins were measured 1 hour after cleansing and after being given skin care-a total of twice per session. This study has brought the following results. 1. Meaningful differences in levels of moisture, oil, and elasticity before and after skin care were found in both the facial/back care group and the facial care group. 2. The two groups did not show differences related to the length of the skin care program, showing that the length of the program did not have an effect on the levels of moisture, oil, and elasticity. 3. There were no difference in levels of moisture, oil, and elasticity between the two groups, showing that receiving back massage in addition to facial skin care did not have an effect on levels of moisture, oil, and elasticity. Although meaningful differences were found in both the facial/back care group and the facial care group, it was shown that back massages did not have an effect on levels of moisture, oil, and elasticity in facial skin. This study inspected the results of back massage, but it is suggested that in the future whole-body management be used to evaluate the effects of skin care.

Major results are as follows: First, socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents showed that there were more females and graduateschool graduates were most frequent in case of professors, and high-school graduates were most frequent in case of industry managers/ employees. Second, as for professors, those who had careers of 5-10 years were most frequent, and 75.2% of them had work experiences in beauty industry. Concerning the overall evaluation of present curriculum, it appeared that most students did not have problems but most professors and industry managers/employees had some problems. In conclusion, in order to satisfy the demand for field adaptation education to strengthen professionalism for students and improve the technical goal, it is desirable to establish and operate practice center directly managed by college where field practice classes can be provided under the direction of practice professors.
