        말레이시아 13대 총선: 사바주(Sabah)는 국민전선의 텃밭인가?

        말레이시아 사바주(Sabah)의 12대(2008)와 13대(2013) 총선의 결과는 독립 이후 말레이시아에서 여당 연합을 형성해 온 국민전선 (Barisan Nasional: BN)은 서서히 사바주의 정치에서 지배력이 이전과 다름을 보여주는 의미있는 결과를 보여준다. 12대 총선 이후 사바주는 국민전선의 정치적 텃밭에서 서서히 정치적 영향력(특히 주의 회 선거)이 약해됨을 보여준다. 비록 13대 총선에서 국민전선(BN)이 겉으로는 사바주의 연방의회 의원 의석을 가져가는 등 정치적 텃밭으로 보여주지만, 이전에 비해 득표력이 떨어졌음을 알 수 있다. 본 연구는 사바주의 13대 총선 결과는 사바주를 여당 연합인 국민전선(BN)의 텃밭(fixed-deposit state)로 부를 수 있는지를 말레이 총선 결과를 토대로 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 문헌 연구를 중심으로 하여 말레이시아의 12대와 13대 총선 결과를 토대로 하여 이전의 총선의 결과와 비교하여 정치적인 변화와 함께 사바주의 사회문화 적·종교적 환경을 바탕으로 한 변화의 조짐을 분석하였다. As all are aware, the results of the Malaysia 12th General Election (GE-12) in 2008 have surprised many. Not only the dominant parties Barisan Nasional (BN) were shocked by the loss of significant numbers of seats but for the first time in the history of Malaysia politics, vis-a-vis, electoral affairs, they were denied a two-thirds majority in the Parliament. Notwithstanding the opposition parties such as Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR: The People`s Justice Party) that form the opposition coalition called Pakatan Rakyat (People`s Alliance: PR), has come to a surprised with the GE-12 result, in which they not even think that were able to challenge hegemonic politics of BN, managed to capture and formed a government at the state level namely Kedah, Penang, Perak, and Selangor, except Kelantan which has been under the control of PAS since the 1990 general election. This article aims to analyze whether Sabah as a “fixed deposit”state is still relevant in understanding the continuity and survival of the BN political hegemony in the context of Malaysia political developments post-13th general election.

        Rapid solvothermal synthesis of microporous UiO-66 particles for carbon dioxide capture

        One of the important metal-organic frameworks known as UiO-66 has received significant attention recently due to its unprecedented chemical and thermal stability, with exceptionally high surface area. We prepared UiO-66 particles by a rapid solvothermal method which took only 30min at 120 oC to prepare, compared to the previous work which took longer than 12 h. Changing the precursor’s concentration ratio from 0.5 to 1.5 and reaction temperature from 80 oC to 140 oC resulted in the increase of UiO-66 particle size from 30 to 150 nm. The highest surface area of ca. 1,300m2/g was achieved at concentration ratio of 1 and temperature of 120 oC with bi-modal pore sizes of ca 0.60 nm and 1.25 nm, respectively. The UiO-66 particles with the highest surface area were then employed to capture carbon dioxide from a binary gas mixture. Results from CO2 adsorption capacity measurement using UiO-66 indicate that the adsorbent was capable of capturing 1.3611mmol/g at pressure of 1.5-1.7 bar and flowrate of 300 cm3/min.

        국익과 말레이시아의 대외정책

        For the Realist, national interest is a crucial concept for explaining states`survival strategy. As national interest of a state is often multifarious in nature, many scholars conclude that national interest could be economic, political, humanitarian, social or environmental interest. National interest is also associated with a security of a state. It is paramount for a state to safeguard their national interest as an iron law of necessity to ensure their security and survival. In this paper, the writers argue that the formulation of Malaysia`s foreign policies is very much determined by what a nation in this case Malaysia, perceive as national interest. Based on historical development, the interplay relation between national interest and foreign policies is discussed in great detail to illustrate that the nature of Malaysia`s foreign policies is primarily geared towards achieving and protecting the national interest at the international level. This article concludes that national interest and foreign policies are intertwined tools vital for enhancing a nation`s well being and survival.

        Optimization of synergistic green emulsion liquid membrane stability for enhancement of silver recovery from aqueous solution

        The emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) process for silver recovery containing synergistic Cyanex 302/Cyanex 272 carriers, palm oil as a diluent, acidic thiourea as a stripping agent, and sorbitan monooleate (Span 80) as a surfactant was attempted. A suitable range of mixed carrier concentration on the facilitated extraction performance of silver was first determined. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize and evaluate the effect of mixed carrier concentration, stripping agent concentration, and treat ratio on the stability of the process. The results showed that the system was stable with no breakage or swelling. At the optimum condition of 8.26/12.39mM Cyanex 302/Cyanex 272, 1.27 M acidic thiourea, and 0.62 treat ratio, the silver extraction performance and recovery were 97% and 54% (4.33 times enrichment), respectively. Further modification of the process and addition of 5% w/v of modifier resulted in 6.57 times enrichment, which accounted for 82% of the silver recovery. Hence, this study shows the capability of silver recovery using a synergistic ELM process and potential to be applied in industrial effluent.

        Self-Cleaning Antifouling Performance Based on the Surface Area of Flower-Like TiO2 as Additive for PSf Mixed Matrix Membrane

        The photocatalytic polymer mixed matrix membrane (MMM) has been widely used for the separation and purification process. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of structural TiO2 (synthetic TiO2 (ST), flower-like TiO2-100 (FLT-100), and flower-like TiO2-600 (FLT-600)) based on the total surface area for the efficient self-cleaning antifouling property. The asymmetric MMMs were fabricated using the phase inversion process with a different type of structural TiO2 as additive. As a result, the addition of synthesized FLT, especially FLT-100, has influenced the hydrophilicity and surface roughness of the MMM. From the powder analysis, FLT-100 exhibits the highest total surface area with 37.25 m2/g and strongly affects the self-cleaning antifouling performance of the MMM. This membrane produced the highest self-cleaning efficiency (68.8%) compared to FLT-600 (58%) and ST (39.8%) after UV exposure, thus, indicates in a better self-cleaning antifouling property that offers the potential to be considered for commercialization in reducing the maintenance cost by using both physical and chemical cleaning method that becomes a problem in membrane technologies.
