Vol.19 No.2

Narrative inquiry studies experiences(Clandinin & Rosiek, 2007). One of the purposes in of the field of adapted physical activity (APA) is understanding the lived experiences of people with disabilities. In this paper, therefore, we aimed to explore the potential contributions of narrative ways to knowing in the field of APA. By exploring the turn to narrative, the authors intended to highlight how the narrative approaches differ from other research methodologies. Next, various narrative inquiry approaches and their methodological traditions were outlined. Finally, how the narrative ways of knowing might benefit the Korean APA study was illustrated. This paper aims to serve as the rationale for using narrative inquiry as another way of knowing in APA studies.

Vol.19 No.1

Over the decades, evidence-based researches (EBRs) have been regarded as the taken-for-granted way of knowing in the field of adapted physical activity (APA) research practices. Although EBRs have significant contribution in APA knowledge productions, multiple ways of knowing should be visible in the APA research literature. As a consequence, the authors intend to highlight there are not only EBRs, but also multiple ways of knowing in APA research practices. This paper explores how the current APA qualitative research paradigms (post-positivism, interpretive paradigm, critical paradigm) produce their knowledge and highlights the contributions and limitations of each research project. Finally, the future possibility of post-structuralist and post-modernist understandings in APA qualitative research practices are discussed.

Vol.19 No.4

The purpose of this study was to examine the issues related to Oscar Pistorius` eligibility of participation in an able-bodied sporting event. Multiple text analysis (Keats, 2009) was utilized for analyzing written, visual, and spoken texts about Oscar Pistorius` eligibility issues. Three themes were emerged: (a) fairness of the competition, (b) use of the technology, and (c) aftermath of the decision. The themes were represented through ``creative analytic processes ethnography`` (Richardson & St.Pierre, 2005). Finally, future research agendas of the field of adapted physical activity were discussed based on the emerged themes.

Vol.0 No.70

Mental toughness among student athletes is one of the most studied topics in the field of applied sport psychology in South Korea. Mental toughness refers to the innate or developed psychological attributes that help a person to cope with difficult situations and is understood to be a key aspect of enhancing student athletes’ performance as it contributes to maintain their confidence and resiliency. However, there is a lack of consistency in defining and operationalizing the concept in the Korean research literature. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature that examined mentla toughness among South Korean student athletes. Following the Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews, Meta-analyses (PRISMA) and PRISMA flow chart, this study reviewed 17 selected Korean research articles. The concept of mental toughness pyramid (Bull et al., 2005) and two recently developed measurement tools were utilized to analyse the selected articles. This study provided generalizable understandings of the concept and suggested ways of improving its measurement.

South Korean student athletes are able to enter university or college without an academic Grade Point Average (GPA), and with only their successes of tournament or competition. This is one of elite sport policies that occurs result-oriented nature for the elite sport in Korea. The result-oriented nature of the elite sport system forces athletes to specialize and over train from the early years, which potentially disregards their rights as students(e.g., taking part of universal education). This negatively affects the academic performance and future career aspirations of student athletes after they retire from the sport. Given that over 90% of Korean student athletes early retire and choose a non-sport career, it is important to extensively discuss the possible strategies to prevent student athletes from early retirement, and to develop a support system for student athletes who experienced early retirement. The purpose of this paper was to systematically review why the student athletes have early retired and what academia has discussed about the retirement in Korea. Furthermore, this paper will discuss future directions for elite athlete development by proposing potential implications and discussing the limitations of previous studies. The paper followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses(PRISMA). Finally, a total of 18 studies examining the reasons and the development plans for the retirement was searched by the protocol. As a result, the Korean student athletes early retire due to over training, injuries, future orientations, lack of enjoyment/fun/interest, stresses of training and/or competition, issues with peers and coaches, and lack of study time. The papers proposed strategies, such as educational attainment and career support programs for student athletes who early retire to improve their well-being. This report also found that early specialization is has a major impact on Korean student athletes’ early retirement. As the Korean sport literature has not discussed athlete development, this paper will suggest a new route that may positively influence upon the early retirement rate among Korean student athletes and can improve the elite sport system in Korea.

        이은영(Lee, Eun-Young),임희준(Lim, Hee-Jun),강동우(Kang, Dong-Woo),윤리라(Yun, Li-Ra),이경준(Yi, Kyoung-June),전용관(Jeon, Justin Y.) 한국사회체육학회 2016 한국사회체육학회지 Vol.0 No.63

Physical literacy provides every individual to obtain fundamental skills to engage in regular physical activity and is an essential component that can lead to a healthy life. Though efforts have been made to increase physical activity among Korean people, physical literacy has not yet been fully discussed. Because physically literate individuals can move their body efficiently, creatively, competently, ethically, enthusiastically, and in socially responsible ways, and they have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to lead healthy lifestyles for themselves and to assist other in acquiring these skills, it is important to promote physical literacy among all people. This paper reviews the concept and philosophical foundation of physical literacy, discusses the importance of physical literacy promotion, and suggests potential implementation strategies specific to life stages and special population groups in the context of Korea. This study provided potential strategies to be developed and implemented to achieve “physical literacy for all” specific to life stages: young children (0-4 years), youth (5-17 years), and adults (18-64 years), and to special populations: elite athletes, women, elders (65 years+), people with disability, and people with chronic diseases. Though physical literacy promotion can be the most effective in the early years for life-long participation in physical activity, physical literacy is essential for every individual and can be promoted at any phase of life. Six recommendations for research and practice are provided at the end of the paper.

Vol.13 No.1

The purpose of this study was to throughly identify the idea on inclusive physical education from the perspectives of people with disabilities. In order to accomplish this, critical ethnography was used. The key informants were the students(n=12) of Y University in Seoul, the members of the human rights society group for people with disabilities, 'Guernica'. The data were collected through the participant observation, in-depth-interview, unstructured interview and document analysis. The data were interpreted through the qualitative research procedures which are transcription, coding, categorization and conceptualization. The findings could be summarized as follows: First, although people with disabilities were treated inappropriately, they had positive attitudes on inclusive physical education and believed that it could reduce the bias toward people with disabilities. Second, the people with disabilities perceived inclusive physical education as a sport itself, not as a rehabilitation. Third, the precondition for the best inclusive physical education needs for the reform of consciousness in both people with and without disabilities.
