        외상적 경험의 공간적 접근

        The purpose of this paper is to investigate how traumatic memories are spatialized by their haunting at and through specific spaces. Trauma studies has paid much attention to the temporal nature, rather than the spatial one, of trauma since trauma refers to an event which is only belatedly assimilated or experienced through its compulsory repetition and the return of the repressed. Sigmund Freud and Cathy Caruth explain these temporal nature of trauma through the traumatic experience of Tancred and Clorinda in Tasso's epic Gerusalemme Liberata. Drawing on their analysis on the epic, I argue that they overlook the significance of the space in which Clorinda disguises herself and as a result, dies. The two characters' experience implies in itself both temporal and spatial aspects of trauma. Thus, this paper employs their story as an allegory of trauma, and investigates the temporal and spatial nature of trauma represented in Toni Morrison's Beloved, primarily by the persistent intrusion of the past and the residential space of 124 Bluestone Road. With a main interest on trauma's space, this paper explores the residence 124 as a space that remembers the traumatic memory and as the architectural uncanny that leads the characters back to their once familiar but long-buried past. As the place of the trauma, 124 becomes the site in which the traumatic memories are repressed, spatialized, denied, reexperienced, and acknowledged.

        <현대영미소설>

        This paper is to suggest a theme-based teaching model of <Modern British & American Novels>. Even though theme-based instruction is not a new teaching method, it is rare to see a syllabus designed around a specific theme. Theme-based teaching is effective in helping students focus on the chosen theme for a semester while reading diverse literary texts. Dealing with several texts in terms of the main theme of the course, students are able to have many opportunities to see how differently or similarly the theme is represented. In addition, a theme-based course helps students feel a stronger sense of accomplishment as to the course theme at the end of the semester. The teaching model suggested in this paper is based on the theme, “rewriting the literary canon.”Postcolonial rewriting and rereading of literary canons are to interrogate European discourses and ideologies implied in the canons. Taking the postcolonial rewriting and rereading as the course theme, this model selects J. M. Coetzee’s Foe, Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea, and Maryse Condé’s I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem as the course texts. These texts rewrite the characters marginalized in Robinson Crusoe, Jane Eyre, and the Scarlet Letter through literary imagination. Drawing on postcolonial and feminist theories, this teaching model attempts to read racial and sexual others and listen to their life stories which were silenced in the original texts. With the specific course theme and course objectives, this model further lists sub-themes for each text, focusing on the text’s relation to its original text. The presentation of sub-themes for each text is of use in guiding students for their reading of the text and their preparation of class discussions on the given topics. This model also uses quizzes and reading logs to stimulate students' reading, writing and thinking on the given themes and topics.

        만화로 읽는 홀로코스트: 아트 슈피겔만의 「쥐」

        Art Spiegelman’s Maus graphically represents the story of Vladek Spiegleman’s experiences in the Holocaust, which is interviewed by the author himself. This study starts from the unexpected marriage between the form and the subject, that is, comics and the Holocaust. Comics has been rarely considered to be a serious medium enough to convey the traumatic history of the Holocaust. However, the commercial and critical success Maus has achieved proves it wrong. Spiegelman’s Maus provides an opportunity to reconsider the possibility of comics as a powerful medium and genre, as well as to invigorate the study of comics. This paper is in particular interested in the ways the Holocaust is graphically visualized as an unfinished history and the process the children of the survivors construct their postmemory of the Holocaust. In Maus, the Holocaust is not dead in the past but still alive in the present to the survivors (Vladek), and the memories of the Holocaust are transferred to the second generation (Artie) of the survivors and help them form the postmemory of the traumatic history. Focusing on fragmented images, panels representing singular or plural temporality, gutters in which time and motion continue or stop, etc, this paper argues that these formal properties of comics efficiently and intimately visualize the aesthetics of traumatic memories.

        역사적 진실 찾기: 마이클 온다치의 『아닐의 유령』

        This paper is to analyze Michael Ondaatje`s Anil`s Ghost in terms of conflicting knowledges of the Sri Lankan civil war. Main characters of the novel such as Anil Tiserra, Sarath Diyasena, and Palipana show dichotomous ways to understand the reality of Sri Lanka during its civil war period. Anil, the protagonist, is a diasporic subject who has just returned to her homeland Sri Lanka after fifteen years of education and work in countries like England and America. Visiting her homeland as an investigator of the Centre for Human Rights in Geneva, Anil adopts western science discourse represented by forensic pathology in delving into the violated human rights cases of the country. Her use of human rights discourse and western science discourse is gradually challenged and contested by situated, local, and subjugated knowledges, which are emerged from the intimate experiences of the indigenous people and utilized by archaeological scholars like Sarath and Palipana in their process of knowledge production. This paper examines these approaches to history and truth as they conflict and explores Anil`s journey in Sri Lanka as a process in which as a diasporic subject she reestablishes her intimate relationships with her homeland.

        초국가주의와 한국계 미국소설

        국가의 경계를 가로지르는 정치적, 경제적, 문화적 변화를 가리키는 초국가주의는 현대의 사람, 자본, 기술, 정보, 상품, 이데올로기, 문화 등의 초국가적 흐름을 분석하는 데 중요한 분석틀을 제공한다. 본 논문은 1990년대 중반에 아시아계 미국문학 비평에서 감지된 초국가적 변화와 최근 한국계 미국작가들의 소설에서 발견되는 주제적 변화를 살펴봄으로써 초국가주의의 관점에서 한국계 미국소설을 소개하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 아시아계(특히 한국계) 미국문학 분야에 나타난 초국가적 패러다임의 전환은 크게 두 가지로 논의된다. 먼저 아시아계 미국문학 비평이 문화적 민족주의에서 초국가주의로 전환되는 과정 을 비평가들의 다양한 논점을 통해 살펴본다. 초국가 시대를 살아가는 한국계 미국작가들의 주제적 변화는 돈 리와 레너드 장을 위시한 2세대, 3세대 작가들의 관심이 국가와 민족의 범주 안에 갇혀있었던 한국계 미국인으로부터 초국가시대의 유동적이고 유연한 개별적인 존재로 변화하는 과정을 통해 논의된다. 또한 본 논문은 폴 윤의 [눈 사냥꾼]을 통해 한국계 미국인의 정체성이 국가나 민족에 제한되지 않고 주어진 조건과 상황에 따라 유동적으로 변화하는 초국가적 주체를 탐색하며, 이를 통해 새롭게 제시되는 공동체의 모습을 살펴본다. This paper aims to introduce Korean American novels through the lens of transnationalism. Referring to the political, economic, and cultural processes that move beyond the borders of nation-states, transnationalism has become a category of analysis for transnational flows of people, capitals, technologies, information, commodities, ideologies, culture among others. In the field of Asian American literature, the transnational turn happened in the mid-1990s and this paradigm shift has affected critics and writers in the field so that we could detect critical and thematic changes in the directions of criticism and creative writing. In order to examine these changes, this paper first looks into Asian American literary criticism with a focus on the change from cultural nationalism to transnationalism. The thematic changes of Korean American writers are discussed while exploring the interests of Don Lee and Leonard Chang in representing Korean Americans as ordinary Americans who are not necessarily identified by Korean ethnicity or national identity. The writers’ interests move from Korean Americans within the categories of nation and ethnicity further to transnational subjects whose identities are fluid and flexible through individualized Korean Americans. This paper takes Paul Yoon’s Snow Hunters: A Novel as an example that embodies transnational subjects whose identities are not confined by their ethnicity or nation of origin but flexible to the given condition and circumstances in the transnational era. In so doing, this paper tracks the critical and thematic changes emerged since the transnational turn.
