Layer-by-layer assembled nanocomposites with structural motifs from nature
염봉준 한국공업화학회 2019 한국공업화학회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.2019 No.0
Biomaterials with highly ordered internal nanostructures present superb mechanical properties, that are difficult to be achieved by conventional synthesis methods. Nacre of abalone shell has sandwiched structure composed of CaCO3 nanoplatelets and organic matrix with a thousand-fold increase in fracture toughness. Enamel layer of tooth with vertically oriented inorganic nanocrystals presents superb combination of stiffness and damping property. Inspired by such structural motifs with planar and vertical alignments of nanomaterials, artificial nanocomposite films were synthesized by bottom-up synthesis methods. Silicate layers were sandwiched with relatively soft organic layers exhibiting crucial roles of the interfacial adhesions. Columnar structured nanocomposites with zinc oxide nanopillars have improved dynamic mechanical properties similar to biocomposites. Bio-inspired engineering can help in design of robust artificial nanocomposites.
