근대 민족국가는 흔히 상상적 공동체로 정의되며 상상적 공동체의 내용은 민족국가의 구성원 사이에 공유되는 공통 문화로 이루어진다. 이 글은 이 공통 문화의 핵심 요소 중 하나로서 스포츠가 근대 민족국가 형성과정에서 수행한 역할을 살펴본다. 애초 스포츠는 시민혁명에 기반한 근대 국가 정치권력의 교체기에 구지배계급과 신지배계급의 계급간 화합을 도모하는 수단으로 발전된 것이라 할 수 있다. 하지만 제국주의의 발전으로 민족국가간 대립이 본격화되면서 스포츠는 계급의 경계를 넘어 민족의식을 형성하는 수단으로 활용되기 시작했다. 이를 위해 보는 스포츠가 스포츠의 핵심 영역으로 자리를 잡게 되었으며 대중매체에 의한 스포츠 이념의 확산이 광범위하게 이루어지게 되었다. 그리고 이렇게 스포츠를 통해 형성된 민족의 성격은 중산층적 가치에 기반한 민족이라 할 수 있다. 스포츠가 민족과 결합하면서 건전한 여가활동이라는 스포츠의 이데올로기가 지닌 허구성이 전면에 드러나게 되었다. 하지만 민족의 역할이 아직도 중요성을 잃지 않고 있는 현 세계체제의 현실을 고려해 볼 때 스포츠 민족주의에 반드시 부정적 요소만 존재한다고 볼 수는 없다. Modern nation states are regared as an imaginary community. Their bases are common cultures which are shared by the members of the nation states. Modern sports is one of the central parts of this common culture. This article examines the role of sports in the process of modern nation state building. Originally sports had been used as an cement between the old aristocrats and the emerging bourgeois. But soon, with the development of Imperialism and the advent of the competition among nation states, sports became the means to forge the nationalism in the minds of the members of the nation states. To make this role possible, there emerged various spectator sports and mass media dealt with these sports events extensively. The nations formed by this process were basically bourgeois nations. With the union of sports and the nations, the meaning of sports as a healthy leisure time activity has been jeopardized irrecoverably. However in this world system where nations still has enormous importance, there exists at l ast some positive function in sports nationalism.
