이 글은 영국작가 바로네스 오르치(Baroness Emmuska Orczy; 이하 오르치)의 『스칼렛 핌퍼넬(The Scarlet Pimpernel)』(1905)의 번역 수용사를 고찰한다. 오르치(1865~1947)는 헝가리 귀족 가문 출신으로 영국인과 결혼하여 영국에서 작품 활동을 시작했다. 『The Scarlet Pimpernel』은 1792년 프랑스 혁명 직후 공포정치하 처형되는 구귀족을 구출하는 영국 비밀조직의 이야기다. 이 작품은 한국에서 완역 전에는 주로 『빨강 별꽃』으로 읽혔다. 미스터리소설이나 모험소설에 관심이 없다면 오르치의 『빨강 별꽃』을 모를 수도 있지만 영화 <쾌걸 조로>나 <삼총사>는 누구나 알 것이다. 『빨강 별꽃』은 이들 영화와 드라마의 원조격인 작품으로 영국에서는 국민문학의 하나로서 많은 독자를 확보했던 소설이다. 『빨강 별꽃』은 작가의 대표작이자 세계명작, 미스터리소설의 고전으로 한국에 소개되어 있다. 이 작품은 영화, 뮤지컬로서 도 한국 독자와 대면했다. 하지만 미스터리소설이 상당한 인기가 있는 지금의 독서시장에서도 이 작가의 작품은 그다지 읽히지 않고 있다. 인지도가 있는 작품을 연구하는 것도 중요하지만 주변부적인 출판물이 된 외국문학의 존재방식을 파악해야만 한 사회에서 외국문학이 수용되어 유통되고 서사적 영향력을 상실해가면서도 문화상품으로서 여전히 존속하는 맥락을 파악할 수 있을 것이다. This article examines the translation reception history of the British writer Baroness Emmuska Orczy’s The Scarlet Pimpernel(1905). Orczy(1865~1947), a Hungarian noble family, married an Englishman and began her work in England. 『The Scarlet Pimpernel』 is the story of a British secret organization that rescues the Old Nobility to be executed under reign of terror after the French Revolution of 1792. This work was read to the readers in Korea, mostly in the form of 『Red Star Flower』. If you are not interested in mystery novels or adventure novels, you may not know the orchid’s 『Red Star Flower』, but anyone will know the movies of The Mark of Zorro and The Three Musketeers. 『Red Star Flower』 is a novel which is a source of these movies and dramas and has secured many readers as one of the national literature in England. 『Red Star Flower』 is introduced to Korea as a classic of world masterpieces and a mystery novel. This film and musical have met Korean readers. However, even in the current reading market where mystery novels are so popular, the works of this writer have not been read much. It is important to study works with awareness, but it is important to understand the context in which foreign literature is accepted, circulated and lost its epic influence in a society where it is necessary to grasp the existence of foreign literature as peripheral publications.
