이 글은 조선후기 교육제도에서 중요한 한 축을 구성하는 과시제도의 형성과정을 추적하는 내용이다. 이를 위해 조선후기 과시제도의 재구조화 과정이 집중적으로 수록되어 있는?과시등록?을 기본 자료로 하되, 조선후기적인 과시제도가 규정되어 있는 ?속대전?을 개념틀로 삼아서 분석하였다. 주요 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조선후기의 과시제도는 1639년(인조17) 소학고강의 신설로 인한 공도회의 실시, 1655년-1659년(효종6-10) 사학합제의 시행과 공도회의 분리 그리고 1663년(현종4) 성균관 과시를 비롯한 제반 과시규정의 정비의 단계를 거쳐 확정되었다. 이후 몇 차례 부분적인 조항이 변경되기는 하였지만, ?속대전?의 규정으로 정착되기까지 큰 변화는 없었다. 둘째, 조선후기 과시제도는 변화된 교육환경에 대응하는 교육정책, 즉 소학교육 강화정책, 재가유생 중심의 학교운영 정책에 영향을 받으면서 강화되었다. 그리고 17세기 중반 이후 과시제도가 확립되면서 18세기에는 조선후기의 중요한 교육제도로서 교육현실에 영향을 미치게 되었다. 셋째, 과시제도의 확립은 조선후기의 교육을 조선전기처럼 학교제도와 과거제도만으로 접근하기 어렵다는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 향후의 연구는 변화된 조선후기의 교육환경에서 과시제도가 미친 영향에 주목하는 것이 필요하다. This study aims at discovering the formative process of the National Encouragement Examination System(Guasi Jedo, 課試制度) of Joseon Dynasty in 17th century. The primary sources are Guasi Deungrok(課試謄錄) and Sok Daejeon(續大典). The results are as followings. Firstly, the important phenomena of the process are the implementation of the So-Hak(小學) test in 1639, the establishment of the Sahak Hapje(四學合製) in 1655-1659 and the comprehensive modification of the examination system in 1663. Secondly, the examination system was connected with the educational policy in 17th century. And the examination system became an important composing element of the educational system in the latter period of Joseon Dynasty. Lastly, the National Encourgement Examination System is a distinctive component of the Joseon Dynasty educational system. It is not found even in the Chinese educational system. So it is important to approach the traditional education of Korea taking into consideration of the examination system.
