Gnotobiotic piglets (n = 10) were hand-reared in conventional germ-free facilities. Piglet body temperatures were measured with rectal and non-contact infrared thermometry (NIFT) on the lower eyelid, auricular center and margin, parietal regions, axilla, central abdomen and dorsum, and the perianal region. Body temperature measurements at central abdomen, cranial dorsum, and perianal regions had NIFT values which had a significant linear relationship (p<0.0001) with rectal thermometry. The predicted equations of between-subject formulas were calculated as follows: rectal temperature, 28.07489+0.30372${\times}$central abdominal surface temperature; rectal temperature, 34.02799+0.15197${\times}$central dorsum surface temperature; and rectal temperature, 33.87937+0.15676${\times}$perianal temperature. These results suggested that NIFT could serve as a valid alternative to rectal thermometry in a portable germ-free facility without disturbing experimental animals. The development of a NIFT body temperature evaluation that does not require animal restraint is clinically advantageous, particularly in gnotobiotic piglets, and would be significantly less stressful for experimental procedures in germ-free facilities.
New Establishment of the Facility for Gnotobiotic Miniature Pigs

The research on the organ transplant between xenogeneic animals become a new window of the life science as high interesting for the human life extension and high technology of medical science. Miniature pig is one of the most representative animal among the candidate animals. It mostly resembles humans in physiological and anatomical manner and shows high availability for the gnotobiotic breeding and clone production. Thus, it is quite important to establish the infra structure for the production of bio organs of gnotobiotic mini pig. The laboratory animal research center in Konkuk University has opened the gnotobiotic miniature pig barrier facility equipped with the most high-end equipment, such as digital automatic environmental control system. Temperature and humidity of this new facilities is regulated to sustain 23±2℃ and 50±5%. The air is to be ventilated 25 times maximum per hour. And the room pressure can be maintained 22 mmAq. In addition, the ion cluster and carbon filters are installed to deodorize heavy odor in the animal room. The facility of gnotobiotic production was constructed with the cutting-edge technologies of intelligent building including automation control system. The precise air pressure control system enables the facility to be fully operative within high pressure atmosphere. The closed circuit surveillance camera system in the laboratory and breeding room provides security of the facility and the condition of animals. This facility will be served as an important infra structure for the research and development of bio organ transplant.
