Injection molding is one of the most important processing for mass production of plastic parts. Usually injection mold for mass production has multi-cavity which is filled through geometrical balanced runner system. Despite geometrical balanced runner system, filling imbalances between cavity to cavity have always been observed. These filling imbalances are one of the most significant factor to make worse in quality of plastic parts when molding plastic parts in multi-cavity injection mold. Filling imbalances have historically been considered as result of uneven mold temperature and mold deflection, but it actually results from non-symmetrical shear, pressure, temperature distribution within melt material as it flows through the runner system (Beaumont, 1997). Filling imbalance could be decreased by modifying processing conditions such as injection rate, mold temperature, injection pressure, melt temperature that are related to shear, pressure, temperature, but it is very difficult to eliminate this phenomenon completely during injection molding processing. This paper presents a solution of these filling imbalance through using "runner core pin" in the runner. The use of runner core pin which is developed in this study creates a symmetrical shear distribution within runner, thereby filling imbalance could be definitely reduced.

Recently plastic parts are molded for the purpose of mass production in multi-cavity system. Therefore, designer is usually designing mold that has geometrically balanced runner lay-out for filling balance at each cavity. Although, mold is manufactured with geometrically balanced runner lay-out, there are actually filling imbalances in the cavities. These filling imbalances phenomenon are caused by complicated interaction between melt and mold. In this study, based on previous studies for filling imbalances in cold-runner mold, filling imbalances in hot-runner mold were investigated by CAE and injection molding experiments. ABS and PMMA as amorphous polymer, PA as crystalline polymer were used to compare the filling imbalances. There were different results of CAE and experiment. The filling imbalances decreased as injection rate increased without regard to kind of resins and were lower than the one of cold-runner.

Configuration of filling imbalance which is originated from imbalanced share rate of melt on runner is changed by runner layout, runner shape, material property, injection pressure, injection speed, melt temperature and mold temperature. In this paper, we conducted a study of runner layout and shape that are main factors of filling imbalance. Other factors such as the sharp corner effect and the groove corner effect are recently released were also considered. The results of study are showed that filling rate of between inside and outside cavity was influenced on shape of runner. Especially, this study suggests a new runner system for filling balance by adapting the two effects of unary branch type runner at multi cavity mold and theoretical investigated flow in the sharp corner type runner.

Recently, the study for filling imbalance in thermoplastic polymer has gradually been increased. However, it is hard to find the researches for filling imbalance of thermoplastic elastomer(TPE). The experiment of filling imbalance was conducted for the three kinds of thermoplastic vulcanizes(TPVs) in the mold with geometrically balanced runner system. In this experiment, the effects of the melt temperature and injection speed on the filling imbalance were investigated. To solve the filling imbalance, Runner Core pin(RC pin) in the experimental mold was adopted and it's effects was tested. In this paper, we present that the insert length of RC pin is dependent to each polymers for optimal filling balance.

There was also the imbalance in TPV injection molding process as well as in conventional injection molding with plastics. The tendency of filling imbalance in TPV injection molding specially decreased by taking place the hesitation of TPV melt.

Almost all injection molds have multi-cavity, which are designed with geometrically balanced runner system in order to made filling balance between cavity to cavity during injection molding. However, filling imbalance has been existed in the geometrically balanced runner system. In this study, we made an experiment and surveyed that are filling balanced variation according to molding condition with thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV). Also, we conducted experiments in order to know the influence of filling balance for runner core pin (RC pin).

Injection molding is the one of the most important processes for mass production of plastic parts. Usually injection molds for mass production are constituted to multi-cavity runner system to manufacture the more parts at a time. Multi-cavity molds are designed to geometrically balanced runner system to uniformly fill to each cavity. But,when injection molding is performed using a mold with balanced runner system filling imbalances are occurred between the cavity to cavity. The previous studies by Beaumount at.al reported that filling imbalance occurred by thermal unbalance on the mold and viscosity variation of resins and so on. In this study, we conducted experiments in order to know the causes of filling imbalance for 3 plate type mold with 8 cavities. And we exhibited a new so called 4BF mold (4 plate type Balanced Filling Mold) to be possible filling balance. We conducted a experimental injection molding to verify the efficiency of the 4BF mold. In the results of the experiment, we could confirmed the balanced filling possibility of the 4BF mold.

Gas-Assisted Injection Molding(GAIM) is an innovative technology for producing plastic parts and has been received extensive attention in the plastic manufacturing industries. But, due to gas-polymer interacting during the gas injection phase, the process has significantly different characteristics from conventional injection molding and, therefore, the control of the process requires much technical knowledge in processing and materials. The experiment was performed about variations of gas-penetration length that is affected by filling imbalance resulting from the structure of runner. The Taguchi method was used for the design of experiment. The most effective factors for the gas-penetration length were the shot size and mold temperature. The most effective factors for the difference of the gas-penetration length were the melt temperature and shot size. This study also discussed the filling imbalance phenomenon in a unary branch runner type mold that has geometrically balanced runner.

In general, precision plastic lens mold applied branched runner system of H-Type. However, filling imbalance of the mult-cavity was occurred by asymmetrical shear distribution. For this reason, the accuracy and the quality of the lens decrease. In this study, the lens mold with radial runner system of X-type lens was applied to improving the quality of lens parts. We carried out CAE analysis of lens mold with branched runner system of H-Type and radial runner system of X-type and we examined the mold temperature, temperature distribution in runner system and shrinkage distribution.
